View Full Version : Games have ruined my life
http://www.gamespy.com/articles/107/1071457p1.html
This is an opinion article from one of the guys at gamespy.com By far one of the best articles I have read in a long time. The point of his little rant is to stop people ridiculing video games because they ruined your life. Rather, you should take charge and say hey, I'm going to play for only so many hours or I'm going to go out for once.
I suggest everyone should take the time to read this article.

I laughed so hard at this article. I loved it.
I broke out laughing at work when I read this:
"Games are better than they've ever been. Shut up, they are. I know you have fond memories of discovering Doom when you were twelve. You're not twelve anymore and Doom sucks."
Good read, lol worthy and good points.

BRILLIANT. I agree. People do tend to find anything but themselves to blame for shortcomings.

I wouldn't be too harsh on yourself lol. What do you feel you should be doing?
Designing motherboards or CPUs :p

I disagree a little with the "games are better than they have ever been" statement. Games that were technical innovations are no longer impressive there are plenty of games that have stood the test of time for me.
I still go back and play fallout 2 about once a year.
Despite having tried a good portion of the newer RTSs (Dow, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes, Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, AOE3, AOM, WC3....) My friends and I still always end up playing Age of Kings: The Conquerers at every lan.
This is not to say that there are not fantastic games released recently, but to say that all of them are better then their predecessors is false in my opinion.
I do agree though that anyone who blames thier problems on video games has bigger issues. I managed to graduate college, have a decent social life and get a good job...all while playing video games.

I totally agree with that statement. Very few games have stood the test of time for me... the ones that have are strategy or sim type of games. Action/FPS games just do not hold up well. Then again there are almost NO FPS games that I play more than once (Call of Duty series is about it)
90% of the greatness of Doom for me today... is just looking back at playing it and being wowed.. although I only played it for a little while (was just not that interesting of a game), it still rates as a classic for me

Nope. Not gonna do it.
I don't have time to take time to read the article. Matter of fact... I should've brought my DS with me so I could've played Chrono Trigger while my vegetable Lasagna was in the microwave.
Basically I get to play games for about 5-15 mins at a time. (Such is the busy life of Team Rainless). I played about ten minutes of Borderlands today.
Finished one side-quest and turned-in for my reward.
That's about where I am with gaming these days.

long as your not one of those guys that shows up to class with their rolly backpacks. They are exactly the reason i insist on taking at least 1 liberal arts class a semester. That and the fact we all know how many women actually take engineering classes ;).

There is only one girl in my department.... I found out where all the girls do end up; over at the Chem E building doing undergrad and grad work. Luckily with my job I deliver a lot of computers to them each month :D

The minute you let anything virtual take over your life that is when you know you are a weak person or have nothing else better to do.

For me, it's the opposite. I turned to video games, computers, and home theater stuff because of my anti-social nature.

Yes but don't you think if you put more time into being more social that you wouldn't spend as much time on the games and thus be a better person?

Have a problem? Blame it on something else!
If games ruined your life, fine. Stop playing them if you have the ability to. Otherwise, don't ruin it for the rest of us. One of the things I hate most is when people take their problems and shortcomings and manage to ruin it for everyone. When is the last time you saw a playground with things like merry go rounds and see saws? Or that one thing with a ball on a pole? They went away because someone had to complain about them and get them removed.
You could say the same thing about the green people (no spellcheck gotta stay away from long words) and what they are doing to car regulations. If you want to feel like you are making a difference, then go right ahead. I want to drive what I want, thank you.
Back to games, if a bunch of people got togeather and started screaming stupid stuff like this, then people would push for goverment regulation or something stupid like that for the amount of games you can play a day, or something stupid like that. It's not likely, but not out of the question though. Luckily not many people complain about it, plus game manufactures have enough cash to lobby nowadays. ;)

Hell yea! Nicely put
I have had a couple of times in my life though where gaming did take over. StarCraft and WarCraft 2&3 took a lot of my time, but I knew it was and finally I "cut the cord" so to speak lol. I really don't get into games like that anymore and haven't even upgraded my computer in about 4 years as a result lol. One benefit to building a good gaming computer is that they are strong enough to surf the web for a long time lol.

it seems to be the way of today, blame everyone and everything else except yourself, and then sue cause it isnt your fault!
McDonald made me fat
Beer made me party
CooL Cigs made me smoke
Religion made me Atheist
Games made me Violent
DRM made me Pirate
I think I still have a bunch more things to blame.

Don't forget, TV made me want to be a movie star and Marilyn Manson filled me with hate.
This topic reminds me of Bowling for Columbine. As much as I hate Michael Moore in that movie, it saddens me to see the ignorance in America and people just point the finger.

Brings up some very good truths that are hard to face for me at least.
I treat my video games/computer hobby in general like crack. Its that addicting to me. I constantly have to keep myself in check. I also force myself to spend more money on my other hobbies than computers to keep them from encroaching too far into my life.
I will say people can say this and that about gaming. You can become addicted to anything and to a insane point.
Guy at my work drinks easily 4 to 5 pots of coffee in a 8 hour work day then goes home and continues to drink more.
Just because you become addicted don't mean your a bad person or your "weak" as someone above put it. People have different types of personalities, I tend to be very obessive over things i'm doing gaming, or anything else for that matter. But only with things I am doing or working on either to be the best or have it perfect. So naturally i get into game a game like WOW and I push to become the best healer lol. That game did take a good chunk of my life, but oh well what can you do lol.
So that's just how I am, I'm sure their are many others like that. We can't help it. Just as you can't help what you are.
btw rainless veggie lasagna i feel bad for you lol.
I coach baseball now and got back into hunting. Most of the games that I do play now are games that I can play with one of my kids or the whole family. Rockband on the PS3 is a great way to spend time with the family and still "game".

Nope. "Normal" society rejected me first. I'm not giving them a second chance.

I quit playing videogames and joined a cult instead.
Say it with me now...
I AM A BETTER PERSON NOW BECAUSE OF THIS! *Capslock proves this*

The way I see it is that everyone has their temptations. Mine may not be video games and yours may not be women. That doesnt mean that either is wrong in their own right. What it means is that we each have our crosses to bear. If one person feels that its video games, it might well be. As humans we get addicted to all mannor of things, they dont have to be drugs its just anything that fulfills in us some strong desire (cough cough WoW and a feeling of importance cough cough)
There was a guy who came up to talk to the sales rep I was talking to and he kept going on and on about how his son's character in WoW was so powerful that he is actually afraid to cut him off. He worried that would damage his son emotionally as he derived such a strong sense of self from the game.
I guess thats kinda what I mean. We all seek that feeling of importance and if you get it from games at the expense of everything else then, ya video games are a problem. But then again so is alcohol women (or men), religion (i.e. cults) or anything else that fosters a dependancy on itself instead of life in general.
Its sad to me that people may read someone's account and summarily dismiss the virtues of product X because of an individual's experience. If it were possible to have people keep in mind what I have kind of outlined above we wouldnt have fanaticals flinging stupid ideas around.
For goodness sake people unless someone is threatening your life nothing actually "makes" you do anything. Eventually the buck stops at your own desk

"But Mike," asks a trite rhetorical device. "How can former gamers creating viral videos about the evils of videogames harm gaming, an art in its infancy still attempting to be accepted by the mainstream?"
To which I reply, "Seriously, rhetorical device? You're going to answer my question right there as if you were written by a brilliant man who's got amazing muscles and is crazy good at sex stuff?"
I am reading all of this guys stuff! Wow! :D
I've always had one recommendation for people who say that they're addicted to video games/World of Warcraft and that it ruined their life.
And here is the answer:
