I'm getting scared of every brand. I probably shouldn't be, because I'm just going by newegg reviews, but it seems like every brand has people saying the company is impossible to get in touch with. Is there a clear choice as far as service goes? I'd like to keep the cost down, but if a card from a decent brand is $155 compared to $145 for a crappy one, I'll spend the extra..
everyone says XFX cuz of double lifetime
thats fine
just make sure its a reference card, XFX are the biggest ones to use cheap crap coolers and parts on their non ref models to make most profit I have found,
for ATI i have always liked sapphire, you'll hear horror stories but I have done 6 rma over the years and they are awesome. All they require for a rma is an invoice and it doesnt have to be yours... I bought a used 4890 and got invoice with it, rma from east to west cost 10 days later I got a vapor X in return for a dead reference model.
I call, have them email me rma, send it in, call when it arrives, they tell me when its gonna ship and its always smooth as butter.

I was looking at XFX but the reviews at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16814150462 are really making me think twice.. Seems like every 5770 has similar issues. I know Newegg reviews are pretty much worthless but there's enough of the same story it's really making me wonder.
there's alot of GSOD theories and complaints and whatever all over the web with 5 series.
I had a 5870 and a 5850 on 775, 1156 and 1366 sockets, the only time I ever had gsod on either was with high clocks or unstable systems. Amd claims its driver related, i think that peoples overclocked rigs and cards kick the driver out in some way for or fashion thats never been seen before... maybe it is driver correctable.
I run my 5850 with msi unlocked bios at stock 1.0875 5850 voltage at 850/1200 (5870 stock clocks) and I cannot make it screw up, i run my fan at 35% in game...
I have rma'd with visiontek also in the past without issue 2x, that to me is how i decide who gets my money, sapphire usually wins.
when it comes to 5 series, i would go reference model unless its a vapor X, the stock ref. coolers are really efficient and quiter than any ref. model cooler ati has ever put out.
BTW that card is one of XFX cheapo non ref models.

this is a good example of cheap XFX at work, i had ref model 4890's and a vapor X to compare, that XFX card was the cheapest hottest running non overclockable POS i ever seen, diff pwm, all plastic parts and worthless cooler. If i was going XFX it would be a reference model.
I've had no issues with this XFX 5770:

Runs cool/quiet, overclocks nicely and handles everything I throw at it.

just a question, is this 5770 replacing your 280?

No, wife saw me playing MWLL tonight and asked if she could play too, so I'm throwing a card in the HTPC.

I know what you mean by being leary of the 5770's. I had an issue with a HIS 5770 crapping out after one day's use but I just RMA'd through Newegg. It's like a crap shoot and you have about a 70% chance of getting a good one with no issues at all.

im using an asus 5770 without any issues so far and its overclocked and overvolted..
though 58xx is better if you got the cash to go that route

XFX is fine, i have one, although the Asus version seems to have the preferred bios.

She wouldn't know the difference between high and low settings so I'm not going to waste money putting a bigger card in there. 5770 should be enough to get playable frames in any game at 1920x1080, right?

I play everything maxed @1680x1050, so I would imagine most games should be playable at mid settings at least @1920x1080.

Perfect. I'm gonna be a bit jealous, she'll be about 4 feet from a 42" 1080p set with a 1st gen G15 and MX revo, while I suffer on a 28" with an emachines keyboard and MX310

Wish I'd read that Wednesday when I bought mine... I got the XFX and you've got me all nervous. The specs though and speeds are all the same regardless of which 5770 right?
Also this is off topic but what's up with this?...

The left is CPUZ and the right is Neweggs spec chart. And yes the picture is mine, forgive me if this is all silly but I'm still new to ATI. Also sorry in advanced for the invasive question in the middle of a thread lol.

I think that's the lower 2D clock used to save power when there's light load on the GPU? Check it again during gaming and it should be running full speed.

-Big hug- ^_^ You were right on man checked it while in windowed mode playing Dragon Age, it said 850Mhz Clock. Thanks a ton man I was worried I supposed I probably read somewhere that, that happened while on desktop but didn't recall it.
You took a lot of worry of my chest there.
