View Full Version : Ultra low noise AMD XP Cooling
Hi!
I am trying to build an ultra low noise PC. By suggestion of the people on the PSU forum I have already decided to buy the QuietPC.com 300WPSU as it is the quietest around. Now I need to buy a cooling device for an AthlonXP1700+ or better (limit will be an XP2000+).
For what I read I believe the best combination for my case is the Alpha PAL8045 cooler with a Parpst 8412NGL fan. This will give a great cooling power (I do NOT intend to overclock!) and just 34db of noise.
I know it is not cheap but what do you think? Please sorry for this basic question but I am a complete begginer to this... I thought all CPU coolers were the same just a couple weeks ago :-((
Please fell free to suggest any other combination... other products... etc...
Thanks for your time!

I've finally attained silence running an XP 2000+ @ 1840mhz
Ok so mines extreme using liquid cooling, but have a read as some tips in the build could help with air cooling.

I also used Seagate Barracuda IV drives which have a fluid drive motor bearing and are very near silent.
I should also have a build report on the site soon about a near silent fan cooled system talked about in the below topic.

Welcome to the Forums!
There are some sites that you can use to "test" sound levels of fans, can't remember exactly where but I'll try to find it....
As far as quiet cooling for an Athlon XP....let me know! <LOL>
I have a few AMDs ( 2 TBirds and 1 XP1800) and none of them are real quiet, although I have my XP in my office and down to bearable levels- took a bit of work though: cpu duct, dropping voltage to 4 fans and some soundproofing.
I am planning a new rig soon, which will be my new office machine, so it MUST be quiet. It is either going to be AMD with water cooling or an Intel system- they Intels are much easier to quiet down than AMDs
The Papst fans are the quietest I know of. However, if the model you're considering is 34db, you might want to consider a quieter model. Before I overclocked my system, I had an 80mm Panaflow on my Alpha PAL8045 pushing 24CFM at 20db and it cooled my XP 1700+ just fine. So, although I wouldn't recommend less than 24CFM, I would say you might consider a quieter hsf at the expense of less cooling.

YS-Tech makes a 80x25mm 48.5cfm fan that is just a bit louder at 36.9dBa. 48.5cfm is quite a good amount of air being moved for the noise level it produces. It really isn't that loud, but if you absolutely need silent running, you can't get any more silent than the Panaflow fans. But if 24cfm isn't enough for the job, Papst has a 80x25mm fan that has 35cfm and only 26dBa.

I use some 80 mm Papst fans as case cooling and they are very quiete. Your combination off Alpha HS and the Papst fan sounds very promising

My Suggestion:
Get a huge heatsink... With a large HS you don't need as big of a fan. Here's a link for an Alpha Pal8045 Heatsink. One of the best ones on the market.
Alpha Pal8045 (http://www.kdcomputers.com/exec/productProfile?id=455)
Here is a link to an extremely quit fan, that should be enough to cool your PC, as long as your not overclocking:
23 dB fan (25 CFM) (http://www.kdcomputers.com/exec/productProfile/393.htm)
If you decide to use this setup, make sure the fan is sucking air off of the Heatsink... Not Blowing air on to it.

He meant 34db total in the whole system I think. The fan he said he's getting for his PAL8045 is only 12db. Plycon.com sells it.

EDIT: Shoulda known it'd be Pabst :D

I ordered a millenium glaciator II and I understand its got a really quiet fan. Well, the cfm is also pretty low, so I think I'll use a ducted 92mm 60cfm Y.S. Tech fan. I wonder if it will work better as an intake or exhaust... Arctic Silver 3 in the mail too!
