I'm soon to be replacing my WD 20.5 gig drive with a Maxtor 60gig drive. The WD is going to be used in a different computer.
The WD is partitioned C&D. I only want to copy the C partition. The Maxtor will only have one partition also(C&D).
I read somewhere that if certain steps are not taken when copying or "cloning" a smaller hard drive to a larger drive(the smaller drive will be removed afterwards), that the larger drive will somehow be seen as the same size as the smaller drive or the, for example 15 gigs of information on the small drive will take up more than 15 gigs of space on the larger drive(something to that effect) Still followin me?:) Is this true??

depends on your software, i think maxiblast wil allow u to resize the copied partition to the size of the target drive.

15 gigs of data = 15 gigs, however you may get more then 15 gigs of drive space because of slack
slack is the amout of the storage block that is left unused but not able to be written to

i cannot recall any drive imaging software that delets the date from the source drive after copy, boy would that be a quick route to no sales

and this statement confuses me: "The Maxtor will only have one partition also(C&D). " dont know what you mean here

I believe that Maxblast will allow a direct copy of a partition, I know that I have used it, and it went without a hitch.

I'm going to be partitioning my Maxtor, thus C&D. C main drive, D used as back up, like my WD.:)

Thanks for the replies, I'll let ya know how it goes when I get it.;)

Question? Whats on the C partition of the WD? is it stuff like downloaded files or music etc?

I know you have to install your OS on the Max, right?

So, If it is, I would install the 60gig, format it and set it up the exact way you would like it. Select every thing from C on the WD and past it on the Max. (say the D partion) once you install the OS on the C partition just copy and move everything back onto the C of the Max. Do you follow me?

Yes, the operating system is going to be placed onto the Maxtor.
The C partition is the main drive on my WD. The D drive is used for downloads and back up programs.
The WD has to be on the Primary master and the Maxtor on the Secondary Master in order to copy and cRAP... This is going to screw up my letter assignments and get confusing. Currently, my WD is C&D, my DVD is E, and my CDRW is F. I'm wondering how this is all gonna get screwed up when I hook up my Maxtor. Will the WD remain as C&D and the Maxtor will take E at least until the partition is set up for the Maxtor, then it will be E and F? Then when the WD is removed, and when the Maxtor is hooked up on Primary as master... I don't know how the computer is going to REassign the letters and screw me up when I begin the WHOLE process. I need a coffee.
