I have been using my ps3 a lot lately just for streaming videos from my computer (windows7). I am probably 50ft away on wireless. I dont have any issues gaming or watching standard def videos, but when i try HD I get lag spikes every 10 min that last for a few seconds.

I have a netgear WNDR3700 N dual band router. Does the PS3 have an N or G wireless card- maybe the issue lies in this? Any suggestions to what would help?

I get the same thing. Anything over about 2Mb/s quality it will lag and rebuffer. I have heard that the wireless adapter in them is horrible.

As far as what they have for wireless connectivity, I think it is either G or even maybe B wireless. Based on the performance, I wouldnt be supprised if it was B.

What are you streaming with? I used to use Tversity, but its kind of a pain to setup and Windows 7 media player (wmp12 i think) is much simplier to use. The ps3 recognized it instantly too

It's a G. And the problem has more to do with the specs for Wireless G (54mbps)... than anything you could blame the PS3 for. You've got a 2Mbps file going through a 54mbps connection... What do you THINK is going to happen?

The PS3 has a G card. I've never been able to stream HD over G very well.

I, too, have had stuttering issues with streaming over wireless to my 40 GB PS3. It works very well over the RJ45 connection, I've tested both with WMP sharing via XP and the freeware PS3 Media Server program via OS X Leopard.

So maybe wireless N adapter as a solution? Tried to google one, but im not sure if there is a preferred one for ps3.

I didn't even know there were external ones. There's one for the 360. A N router in bridge mode connected to the CAT5 jack would do the trick though.

I agree. If the connection HAS to be wireless, then get another cheap N router that does bridge mode and stick a cable in the PS3.

Wireless G was never meant to handle HD video.

I've been looking at this one: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/30925-start-your-buying-netgear-wndr3700-reviewed?showall=&start=2

I am using Tversity to stream from my video server, but anything over 1.5 to 2Mbps wont hold a solid connection. I have since just wired a line to it and dont worry about wireless.

Also, like mentioned you can use a Wireless AP and connect that way.

I nor my comrades have had much luck with netgear products. Linksys has gone downhill too. In fact its good to find a decent router these days.

Hey,

This is the better SW for PS3 media.
PS3 media server. It also has the ability to transcode on the fly.

I like PS3 Media Server but it is glitchy for me compared to WMP sharing. Often with PS3 Media Server if I start to fast forward through a video it will throw the audio out of sync once I return to normal speed playback.

So WMPis better? I will try this.

I think WMP is a little smoother, but I'm stuck using PS3 Media Server for the time being as I'm streaming from a system using OS X. So far PS3 Media Server is the best free solution I've found to do this from OS X.

Hei,

I have an other problem using WMP, playing HD media... x264, mkv and vob.
This I can only get towork on PS3 media Server, and Twonkey.
Streaming from WMP, theese files does not appear on my PS3 as they do with the Media Server or Twonkey.

Any thoughts?

Atle

You know, I gave up on streaming a long time ago and just use a USB HDD.

Why not just download then delete what your streaming? You should be able to download the files your streaming...we just did that the other day on my buddy's PS3.

I could...its just convenient to have all my movies on 1 computer and stream them to all my other devices. I did try the other media server, but i had similar problems..its definitly the wireless G in the ps3 cuz my laptop has wireless N and doesnt stutter at all from the same location.

Anyone know if the new slim PS3 has a better wireless card in it?
EDIT:
Hmm after googlin looks like no :(

Yeah... I told you that like a week ago. :)

You could already have your new router by now.

Hey guys I want to try PS3 Media Server because for some reason, Windows Media Player won't stream even though I have everything enabled. When I go into the Music folders on my PS3, it's empty.

So I just downloaded PS3 Media Server, but I have no idea how to use it. I see my PS3 detected it, so do I just have to browse the folders on my PS3 to select certain albums I want to listen to? Surely there is an easier way. The only thing I can find in my "Music" folders on the PS3 are album artwork and other stuff.
