hello all.

im trying to decide on what new LCD display to buy and was wondering if anyone could help guide me to a nice one that can also play games well.

i know most people say LCD's and games dont mix but i think i have found a really sweet one. if you dont mind looking at the link--- http://www.viewsonic.com/products/lcd_vg191b.cfm -- id really appreciate any input. this thing has 500:1 contrast and 250 cd/m. desktop space is a real issue so im opting for a LCD unless it just wont cut it in games at all.

also any other suggestions are welcome,

thnks!!!!

I think you should ask in the general hardware also as lots of people there are good with monitors!

Gaming will be fine as long as it's not a FPS. FPS are iffy's. I've seen LCD's that "aren't playable" or "you could manage."

The pixel response rate on that LCD looks like a "you could manage" for games like Q3/SS/UT. Black is still a problem tho'. Usually if it's dark, it's black. Or so dark near black that you can barely tell the difference.

That one has analog input and resolution scalers in LCD's are quite decent now. You won't have to worry about playing at different resolutions other than your native.

Other than the price. You'll love it. Once you go LCD, you can't go back.

I have a Viewsonic VA800 and am thrilled with it! It has more contrast and brightness then the other brands. It is also fast and I have no problems with gameplay or watching DVD's on it. If you are going to get a LCD I highly recomend the Viewsonic. I did a bit of looking and reasearch before I went with it and I strongly believe I made a very wise choice after living with it for a month now :D

One good general rule when considering a LCD is refresh rate. Most LCD's out there have decent to good picture quality, but all do not have good refresh rates. If you dont know, refresh rate is the number of times that the image on the display is drawn each second. If your LCD monitor has a refresh rate of 72 Hertz (Hz), then it cycles through all the pixels from top to bottom 72 times a second. You get the idea now, I hope that helped. :D

oh yeah, one more thing, an obvious way of seeing if your monitor has poor refresh rate is by playing a game, and moving your mouse side to side (preferably a FPS), this action should cause your crosshair to move different directions, now, if you did that, and see your screen skipping some frames, then your monitor isnt handling your games the way it could be... that, or your vid card isnt to good.

There are LCD montiors out there that are much brighter than other LCD monitors. So this means that the edges of the monitor won't be dark. I know that Phillips has monitors that have this extra brightness. But they do cost a little more because of the extra feature :)
