I was running a Shuttle AK31 with a 850MHZ Athlon and generic 300w P.S. I decided to go ahead and replace the cpu with 1.2g T-Bird and now the thing doesn't POST or even beep! Everything was working fine with the 850. Checked to see if graphic card was seated properly and am pretty sure the CPU was also. Does anyone have any ideas? Thought maybe not enough juice and I do have a 400w Ernmax in other CP if I really had to check, but a pain in the but to remove from lian li case.

disconnect all your hardrives and ROM's
Remove all but 1 stick of RAM
Remove all PCI/ISA (throw away ISA :) )except your video card.
Disconnect all extra FANs (except CPU cooler)....

So the goal is to try posting with only
1 motherboard
1 cpu /HSF
1 Video card
1 stick of RAM

If it post now.. then power could be your problem.
And are you sure you didn't crack your core? As a cracked core could prevent you from posting.

I don't think the core is cracked I'm using a Swiftech 462. I'll unplug every thing and hope its the power. I'll let ya know :)

Are you positive the chip is working? Those 1gig+ Tbird do take alot of juice maybe your PSU. But go with Jay's idea of seeing if its your PSU. What is your PSU rating on the rails etc?

Because if the 5v rail is too low then it won't boot generic brands aren't too good for the high class AMD.

I used Jay's thingy in the past alot as well and it is a good method.

Nope, CPU worked fine in Abit board must be PS. I've tried everything Jay suggested even tore completely down to make sure core wasn't cracked and still post. I'll pick up a knew P.S this week, any any ideas on one with a fairly reasonable price?

So it posted with a torn down system eh?
I for one personaly belive Enermax would be a good way to go.
BUT...
Only if you get a few certain modles, as some have a lower 5VSB...
the EG301P-VE (3OOW), EG365P-VE(350W), EG465P-VE(431W)
Would be good ones to look at, as they have a better 5VSB rating.

Jay,

It would not post even after tearing it down and putting it back together. I like Enermax PS I've got the 431w in my other system. But I'm not sure if it will fit in this case I'm working on now. I beleive it's an Anatech case or something like that and I'm afraid the fan covers on the PS will interfere with the case itself. Might have to try and modify the case.

well if you got the 431Watt in another system... before you go and spend more money you should try that PSU with the 1.2GHz CHIP...
Also, do you have the latest verion of your BIOS???
Or one that came out after the 1.2 GHz CPU/or states that your CPU is supported?

Did you try reinstalling the 850 to see if the mobo is still working? You also might want to try different RAM.

Put the 850 back in and everything is the same as before the switch, no beep or POST. Replaced graphics card no change and put Crucial PC2100 in another dimm still nothing. Either the board died or not enough juice. Talked to a tech at local computer store and he said 300w should be plenty of power:confused: I don't know, so I'm on my way to store to buy PS. It's nice to have extra around the house anyway. I don't understand this, everything worked fine before I changed out processor. Do ya think something might be shorting out? The power switch works when turned on but it won't shutoff when trying to turn it off and the the green led light on floppy doesn't light up at all. This system worked fine for 4 months should have left it alone. any more ideas:eh?:

I'm running a t-bird 1.33 on a 400w power supply. Yours should be plenty. Try your CPU in another computer if you can.
