Hi there!

I'm a complete newb to HTPC, and have been doing some research into it after using my xbox to watch shows on my pc. However im damn tired of file format conflicts and other crap, and am looking to build my first HTPC. I was wondering if anyone could help me create a budget build HTPC for my 40" samsung that can use my desktop as a media server. It will be running linux to save cost.

I'd like to do the following things right away:
-Watch movies/shows from my media server in 1080p

I'd like to upgrade it later if this starts working the way I want it to by being able to:
-watch live tv
-DVR functionality

Ive been thinking a relatively cheap build for my samsung such as:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136523

I have no idea if this would be enough power, or if I could skim even more off the top.

Also, is it possible to create HTPC for old analog tv's? Is it more costly, or can it be done even cheaper? I'd like to completely replace the cable setup if this works the way I want it to when I move back home, but it would be a mix of analog and digital tv's with my desktop as a media server.

Any advice you have is much appreciated :)

I would look more in to a 5000line ATi if you plan to bitstream HD audio later on. Just me but I would look at something alittle stronger then a celly. If you plan to use FFDshow for older movies, it will tax the CPU. I use to run a HTPC on a old 25" CRT tv, didn't looks great but it worked. Don't forget a blu-ray drive.

What would you suggest for a cpu/mobo for ffdshow?

I'd say go with the e5300 Wolfdale. Video card looks good.

Any suggestions for a super cheap htpc case with a power supply? I read the faq but those cases are outrageously priced. If not, any suggestions on a cheap case, and a cheap power supply (no idea of the wattage requirements of this thing)?

Best bet just get a case you like. Make sure it has room for all the items you want to put in it. Good Antec HTPC case. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129034&cm_re=antec-_-11-129-034-_-Product)
