hey all,
i am guessing that many of you out there are useing rounded cables for in your comuters. i have seen them, but i also know the arguement for the flatter cables. so i was wondering about people's expierences with them. i have heard that it makes data loose and slower transfer rates, and things like that, and to just no do it. but on the same thing, i hear from people about the evil's of overclocking, so i am not sure if the rounded cables is just a factor of popular ignorance, or if it actually has weight to it. because those ide cables really block air flow, and i would like to change it if i could other than spending alot of time arrangeing them in place (and useing some duct tape so it stays there!) but yeah, any one have problems with them?

Here's my way of thinking on rounded cables.
They are only good for dressing up your system. I had data coruption problems while using them. 3 reinstalls of windows finally made me give the rounded ones away ($20 apiece).

There's 80 wires in an ATA100 cable. The extra 40 wires are to ground out cross-talk interference between the other 40 cables that the drive is actually using. To me, it makes no sence to cut them apart, because it disables this effect.
I just take my time and fold them out of the airflow and get great results with both data and airflow. If you want them to be pretty colors, then paint them.

Now I know some people will argue in the face of logic, and I expect that. But the cables are made the way they are for a reason. Wire insulation is transparent to the higher frequencies that ATA66/100 uses, so the grounding wires are required to be directly in between the data wires.

There's my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I think they work and look great!

and I think my temps reflect that a little bit.

and they are 80 wire ata100 standard, and they perform just as good there.

My experience has been good. I have one ATA100 cable that I bought, and others (ATA33) that I made myself.

I have never noticed any problems.

Works good for me. Perhaps while modding you could have cut some of those wires abit making some bad contact between the HDD and the motherboard thus data loss. Could also be your PCI dividiers or something who knows.

I think they are for the following: Style, and keeping your case clean (Means more airflow).

Yeah, I have seen rounded cables that work good too. I suspect that some manufacturer's use a larger diameter insulation which doesn't shield the wires any better, it just spaces the actual conductors further apart. This would help avoid crosstalk between wires.
I think that would account for the differences people see in the data corruption problem that I've had in the past.

*edit* I didn't mod them, I bought round ones. I'm happy they work for you guys, but once bitten is twice shy.

I use rounded cables without any problems to speak of and the red in my black case look great.

I may just think it is just bad luck or something!

I love these thing they look so clean where the old one were big bad and reduced air!
