The instructions with the Linksys are pretty straightforward, if you still have them ( I usually throw instructions to the side and promptly lose them!)
But if you don't have them: by default most gateway routers use 192.168.1.1 (my Linksys uses this) or 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0. And usually they provide dhcp unless you shut it off. Try setting your pc to use dhcp and see if it connects; if not, try entering 192.168.1.1 after http:// in a browser - that should get you to the config screen.
My linksys used admin as the password, no username out of the box.
Those are the first things to try.....
And the username and password you made up in win98 are now the only username aand password you can use to access that pc......:D Kidding!
98 security is nonexistent: that just saves desktop settings! You can hit ESC and get to the default desktop. But you won't be able to access the 2k pc without credentials (log into the 98 pc with a username/password that is on the Win2k pc)

OK.
Go to: Control Panel, open the Network icon.
You will start off at the Configuration tab, and you should see 4 things:
Client for MS Networks, your NIC, TCP/IP and File Sharing. You shouldn't need any thing else, unless there is a modem, or you play games that use IPX protocol.
Go to the TCP/IP settings and click on Properties.
***IF you use DHCP on the other pc, make sure this one is also set for DHCP (You might need to change a setting in your router to allow multiple pcs to get DHCP addresses)
***IF you do NOT use DHCP: you need to enter the information manually- ip address should be almost the same as the other on, only the last number changes. the most common settings are 192.168.1.1(subnet 255.255.255.0) for the router, 192.168.1.2 (subnet 255.255.255.0) for the first computer, so the 2nd would be: 192.168.1.3 (subnet 255.255.255.0) You will also need to enter the router's ip address on the tab for GATEWAY, and DNS (enable DNS if it is disabled)
Also on the DNS tab is a spot for HOST- that is the computers network name, and DOMAIN- this should be either the domain, or more likely the WORKGROUP your are in.
After that is done, say ok and go to the Identification tab: you must also enter the computer name and workgroup here.
Click on OK, and reboot the computer. You should now be all set.

ok what do i put for the name and workgroup and i dont have a domain my comp when it starts it says adminstrator and the password do all the comps have to have the same workgroup names and things???? jsut so i know i think i use DHCP i knwo my router dosent have a domain and things hehe thx man im gunan try that all the info i can get is great

Workgroup names have to be the same, and if you want to make it as simple as posible, just use the same login you use on the 2000 pc on the 98 one.
The domain stuff doesn't really apply unless you have a domain controller on you network (needs NT 4.0 or Win2K Server) EXCEPT: in 98, under Client for Microsoft networks, you need to put the workgroup name where it says DOMAIN; DON"T check the box next to "USE NT DOMAIN CONTROLLER" though!
Try that, good luck, and let me know if it doesn't work!

i got win 2k adv server as the main and the user name is administrator should i use that on all of the pcs and plus my cable company dosent provide a domain so im a little lsot on that domain thing ur talking about so what should i use as a workgroup name cause the main system says Administrator????
rogerdugans
02-03-02, 07:49 PM
Okay, I'll use my setup as an example:
my workgroup is DFGNET (doesn't matter what it is as long as they are all the same), I use doug as the username, and admin as the password ( <--just an example!).
All my (windows)pcs can access each other since they use the same logon. Win9x: anyplace it SAYS domain, just put the workgroup name, but do NOT check any nearby check-boxes!

Actually, I don't have Adv. Server here right now....
2K Pro its-->Control Panel, Users and Passwords!
If it isn't the same, pm me and we'll finish up there, ok?

Ok, slow down. It is very hard to understand what your posts mean without punctuation.
At least skip a line between sentences, please: I am trying to help out, and will continue to- but you have to stop making it harder, ok?!!!
NOW: the computer that is connected to the internet now- is it using dhcp? If yes, than set the other one the same.
To check this in Win2K, right -click on My Network Places, and then right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
In Properties you will see two tabs: the first says General and has a list of stuff- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) should be there. Select TCP/IP, and then Properties. This is where you set DHCP or IP address. If the computer that DOES connect is using dhcp, then the other one needs to also.

Ok! HOST is the name of the computer on the network and has to be unique.
In 98 anyplace it says DOMAIN put the name of the workgroup- this HAS to be exactly the same as the workgroup name you used in Win2K.
When you use DHCP it takes care of all the ip address and gateway stuff for you.
Can you get to the configuration screen for your router in a browser?

##@4!
Should have thought of this earlier- I'm trying to do too many things at once! Check the cables: take the one that is plugged in to the computer that does NOT connect, and switch it with the one that does. Then see if you can still connect: if you can't, that cable is no good. If you can, then we aren't done yet........

lol the cable on the seconf comp is 100 feet thru the floors of my hosue ok this is how my router is set up it goes modem to router and then 1 port on router to my comp and i ran a cable form 2nd port to that comp downstairs

do i need to configure my router cause the lights arent on for 2nd port
rogerdugans
02-03-02, 10:45 PM
It may just be that the cable is bad: you should get the other pc right next to the router until you get it set up right, and then try it downstairs!
And sorry, bud, but I am just about exhausted now, and I still have some work to do before I get to sleep!
If you still haven't gotten it, I'll be around tomorrow night.
Good Luck!

If you are using dhcp, then tcp/ip is good.
If you don't get hub link light, or a link light on the network card either your cable or nic are bad.
Try pinging the router: at a command prompt, type this:
ping 192.168.1.1
and then hit enter. You should get 4 lines of text, with the ip addres, and how long it takes to get there.
If you don't get that, it is a hardware problem.
Websites fixed. Gotta get up early, going to bad. Good Luck!
