Evening all,

I've been looking at some of the other threads but haven't really seen a answer for this question so...

I'm looking to build a new computer and what I would like to put together is a multiple screen setup.. I would be buying the screens as part of the project and I've eyed a lcd screen that is 24" with 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Thinking that I would put 3 of those screens together with an ATI eyefinity capable card, the question occurs to me.. which one?

In other words, seeing the frame rates of single screen setups on some games (of course Crysis, Stalker etc.) will attempting eyefinity really hurt the frame rates, thus suggesting 5970 or, rather, can a pair of 5850s in crossfire handle the job?

I'm 50/50 on either a I7(930) or a X4 965 for the processor.

I'd rather not spend a ton of money unless it really necessary to accomplish the 3 screen setup. Any experience that you may have had setting up eyefinity is helpful.

Thanks,

Michael

:welcome: sidestep. I don't have any experience with Eyefinity but you might want to make sure that at least one of the screens you chose has a DP port or you will end up buying an active DP to DVI adapter for about $100. Passive adapters will only support two monitors so three monitors or more requires an active adapter. I would think that a single 5870 and definitely two 5850's would cover your requirements pretty easily. A 5970 definitely would but that might be overkill.

Regarding the CPU it doesn't matter which one you choose really. Both will get the job done but the i7 930 is superior. You can most likely achieve a higher OC on a CPU that faster clock for clock too. If all you are doing is gaming though, the AMD will get it done.

Thanks for the welcome bda. I'm well aware of the DP port issue and the monitor I have chosen are ok for that.

I guess where I'm unsure about the whole issue is whether 1920x 1080 times 3 is much more work for the GPU compared to say 2560x1600 on a single monitor.

Thanks,

Michael

Not really, it's only about 50% more pixels.

3x 24" Eyefinity setup...

Rather not spend a ton of money...

I think I'm missing something here. There's a way to build that setup without spending a ton of money? :P

Well yes and no .. An AMD processor would cost less than the I7 setup.. and a pair of 5850s would cost less than a pair of 5870s or a single 5970.. (although not by much)

So yeah it's expensive but there is a little expensive vs. really expensive.. :)

I have an eyefinity setup, my monitors are running at 5040 x 1050 (1680 x 1050 in a 3x1 setup) and i find that i am not getting enough power out of my 2 5770's (which are considered close if not equal to a 5870) to run the newer games at that res. Ive tried MW2, Battleforge, Dirt 2 and if i have all the eye candy( including AA and all that fun stuff) turned up the frames are not acceptable for me (anything less than 30 is not acceptable for me). so if your going 5760 x 1080 you better go with a 5970 to be safe. Do not go with the 2 5850's because the 5970 is better and about the same price (2 5870's should not even be considered unless you already have a 5870 and looking to upgrade. a 5970 is just 2 5870's underclocked to the 5850 specs due to some regulation about vid cards cannot go over 300 w or something, look it up. My advice go for the 5970 and try it stock. and then if its not good enough crank up the clock speeds. If the 5970 is too expensive then you might not be too happy with the 5870 unless you play the older games or have all the graphics options turned down.

EDIT: And if the computer is just for gaming then the AMD will do just fine or even an I5 750. (something that i know now after going with the I7 920 and spending a whole bunch of extra money for nothing. As I'm not using the i7 for anything like folding or encoding which it is a monster at.
