View Full Version : My Celly is upset with me...

Long story short:
900Mhz Celly (SL5LX; Coppermine; 100Mhz native FSB)
Was running nicely around 1Ghz for a while.
Idle: 29C
Load: 40C-41C
I tried to take it to 1.2Ghz a while back (got a new BIOS from an ASUS rep).
Worked once @ 1.80v.
Wouldn't work after the first time now, not even with slow mem settings + 1.85v.
Took it back to 900Mhz/1014Mhz/1043 (tried all different speeds, also tried older BIOS versions).
Idle: 40C
Load: 40C-41C
Only gets cooler when I underclock to 600Mhz. Even then, it doesn't drop below 35C.
Northbridge temp also rose about 2C-3C average.
So, any clues as to what happened?
By the way, I'm using the BIOS and PCProbe in Windows to get these temps.
It may have just worked once out of luck is my guess. Hows your PSU? Is the 5v rail too low to boot at high voltages?

What cooling are you using? Some simple tips can be to take off your heatsink and reapply the thermal paste. Use alcohol or a similar solvant to clean of the cpu and the heatsink, then apply a thin layer of pasted either with a razor or side of a plastic card. Another simple tip is to take off the fan and half peel off the sticker on the back and in the hole put a few drops of lubricant, not wd40, but an oil. I put swiss skate bearing lubricant in my fans. I'm having the same troubles with my celeron 1GHz, and thats what I've done so far.
Did you try to burn it in? Try to drop your celeron to 66MHz fsb and increase the volts to 2.0v and run prime95 or other burnin software for a few days. I'm doing that now, I'll post in a few days to see if it helped me.

PSU is just fine. Ran my old P2B with a PII 300 @464 for the longest time just fine. 300 watt antec (came with the 1030B case). So that's not the prob (especially since the PII took more voltage than my new Celly).

Vantek 6035D. Delta fan and all. Though I'm purchasing the 6027D just for the hell of it (that and I'll need another HSF for my next setup).
I've reaplied ASII a few times; cleaned with rubbing alcohol; reseated the HSF many times; removed the proc and looked it over (nadda); etc.
The problem is though, I used to get great temps (29C idle, 40C full load). But now, since that incident, I'm getting 40C idle. Not good. :(
Any other sugestions?
have you tried flashing back to your old BIOS? You did 2 things, and a problem occured. You flashed the BIOS, and o/c'ed the chip. Unless you did something weird to the chip, it shouldn't be giving you higher (at least not that high) temps than b4 the o/c...and you have re-seated your HS since then with new thermal paste. The only thing you haven't done is flashed back. Try it...also, is the cpu giving you any errors at those temps? If you screwed the chip up, it should be giving you errors...

Heh, you missed it, no biggie:
"Took it back to 900Mhz/1014Mhz/1043 (tried all different speeds, also tried older BIOS versions)."
Yah, did try older BIOS versions. I tried the original and the one prior to the latest one:
1002 = original
1003 = what I was using before BIOS from asus rep
1004 007 = What the ASUS rep gave me, and what I tried 1200 with.
sorry, not enough coffee when I read the thread...:(

my guess is you burned a small part of the cpu and now its using more voltage and making more heat? just overclock it as high as itll go and if it dies, ok a new celeron is only a few bux
