I have an old p233 with win95 which I want to upgrade to win98se - however the win98se cdrom I have is for new computers only and will not upgrade my win95 (says I need the upgrade disk). As I dont want to have to try and source the upgrade disk is there anyway I can remove the existing os and install win98se? I have heard before about reformatting the hard disk but I am not sure how to go about it? Is it possible to just deltree the windows dierctory from the MSDOS prompt? Then install from there?

I have that too. A format will take care of it. I would just start clean if I were you.

Not unless you have the upgrade version of Win 98 then no it will not just magically turn over.

As Flounder mentioned its best to do a clean install since an upgrade install will usually corrupt mixing the old and new files which don't like to work together.

Just go into control panel and pick add/remove programs and make a boot disk. From there install the disk into your floppy and restart. Then when it goes into dos promp (A:\) type in help and read up in there, it will tell you how to reformat your hd through dos and get that new windows 98 loaded up.

Sorry for sounding like a complete dufus but just to be sure - I make a boot disk from my win95 os via the add/remove program setup, then insert the floppy of the bootdisk, restart my computer and it will automatically go to msdos prompt a:?
After that I type in help which will give me info on formatting hard drive - I follow procedure given and re-format hard drive. After this stage do I then insert my cdrom for win98se (its not upgrade!!) and restart the computer and the installation will be automatic? Sorry for asking such dumb questions but I dont wanna end up with no os!!!

the utility to clean up your disk is called fdisk and it should be on the windows 95 boot disk that you made. you have to delete windows 95 from your system to put on the 98se disk.

(A:\)help

goes to the help menu which should explain fdisk, scandisk, chkdsk, format, and a few other things.

all of these should be on the windows 98 bootdisk as well which you will need to install 98se.

I havent done this in ages since i use nt so i highly advise you to read up on it.

When your ready to go i believe at the propt you type

(A:\)fdisk.exe

and then i think you use

(A:\)format.exe

and then you should be ready to install 98se. please do some extra reading on it since i am not positive since its been awhile.

I generated a boot disk for my win95 from the add/remove programs control panel - however it does not have a help file neither does it have a format.exe file (only format.com)! It does however have the fdisk.exe file and it also has an uninstall.exe file. Should I use the uninstall file after the fdisk execution?

Don't worry about command.com, its suppose to be liek that. If you want to do a clean format this is the process that you wanna go through. but again its best to read up on it and make sure its what you want to do...

Insert bootdisk
restart
it will ask you if you want help, boot with cd room support or no
choose w/ cd rom support
use the format command to format the drive (format c: /q)
where c: is the drive letter you want to format and /q is quick
once that is accomplished put in your disk and go to that prompt
ex. d:
run setup.exe
and from there you're set

remember to remove the bootdisk then one your computer wants to restart to continue window setup

i'm not familiar with 95 boot disks but i assume they are like ME boot disk. if you want to do fdisk thats a different story but its similar except you use the fdisk command to make your partitions and what now.

but i do advise you to read up on the subject before you undergo the task

my algorithm might not be what you want to do

Thanks for the info phungilax - only problem is that when I restart with the boot up disk I dont get the message asking if I want help. Do you know where I can read up on this?

Detective: What options are you getting? Help file doesn't have to be acessed threw that particular menu it can be browsed through the "dir" command in dos when your in the A drive and you'll see a help file.

Then enter the help file and then from the help file it should show you everything.

Boot using boot disk
format c: /q/s
go to cd drive (may have moved one letter down)
setup

thats it
