My old WRT-54 router is finally dying, I get random disconnects and it doesn't have enough range to reach the main room in my house from the upstairs office. That said i'm looking for a new router and can't figure out which:

DGL-4500 $169
DIR-825 $150
DIR-655 $99

The main room is about 60 feet from the office. I mainly use the network for gaming and downloading large files, and I move those files around alot from my desktop to various laptops. I also have an xbox 360 which collects dust but it couldn't keep a stable connection on my current router.

Any thoughts?

I would go with the DIR-655. It has gigabit LAN connections which should be plenty for what you're doing and it's the cheapest. I didn't see whether it has wireless n or not, but if you do then I would look at a similar router of the same price. But remember because something is more expensive doesn't mean it's better.

Is there a reason you didn't consider a Netgear WNDR3700 or Linksys WRT610N?

I'm shopping for a new router right now with the same exact needs as you listed and I can't make a decision. I recently had a Netgear WNR2000 hooked up and it would disconnect randomly every 30 minutes-2hours lasting for about a minute or two before internet came back up. Without a router in place my wired connection is stable pretty much 24/7.

I really don't care if I need to pay a bit more, say between a $99 router and a $169 one, if I know it will be stable.

This should help: http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/d-link-xtreme-n/4505-3319_7-33246906.html

FYI, I heard the WNDR3700 was the bee's knees.

But if I can find the DIR825 for $75... I'll just get that. Not sure if it supports bridge mode... I haven't read that far yet. :)

Yeeeeeeeeeah... I think I'll wait on the WNDR3700N...

Especially if the 825 you wind up getting is a B1 model.

+1 on the DIR-655.

I have it and it's been running perfectly for around 2 years now. Fitted with wireless N and full gigabit connectivity!

I have a DIR-655 and you know where it is right now? In a box called big box of routers.

Want gigabit, wireless N and don't care too much for dual band? Go with Asus RT-N16 and load tomato on it, if you want dual band then go with the wndr3700

+1 for the ASUS RT-N16. Newer CPU, more ram, linux firmware (aka tomato) Just ordered mine from directron $89 shipped with 3% coupon code "preferred3" Cheers!
