Using CCC ati overdrive, I tested my new xfx 5770 with 3dmark06 on a xp32 machine with a single monitor.

http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=15180BD6108&vpn=HD577AZNFC&manufacture=XFX

These are the results in the order that I did them, using an e4400 @ 2.8ghz, default memory 1200mhz.

gpu: 850mhz
3dmark06: 12405

gpu: 875mhz
3dmark06: 12315

gpu: 900mhz
3dmark06: 11969

gpu: 925mhz
3dmark06: 11863

gpu: 960mhz
3dmark06: 11785

gpu: 850mhz
3dmark06: 11527

gpu: 850mhz
3dmark06: 11589

closed chrome
gpu: 850mhz
12204

gpu: 960mhz
12300

restarted computer
gpu: 850mhz
12397

restarted computer
gpu: 900mhz
12387

restarted computer
gpu: 960mhz
12375

restarted computer
gpu: 825mhz
12387

My scores went down as I increased the gpu. At first I thought it was ati's new error correction tool that fixes artifacts but decreases performance.

But when I tested it again at 850mhz the score was almost 1k below what it should be.

When I closed google chrome it had 5 futuremark pages open. Could that really make a difference of 700? Also the score should have went back to the default of 12400, not 12200.

Then I just started restarting my comp in between tests. Got no performance gains at all.

Did I get a dud? Does this score fit with my cpu? Is there some handy new tool that ati has invented that's messing with my results?

Unless you increase the resolution from the crappy default 1280x1024 resolution used in 3dmark06, your scores aren't going to change much other than a fluctation depending on CPU speed. A score different of 100-300 at the same speeds is not uncommon on that benchmark depending on background processes and the efficiency of your overall computer. Chances are the drops associated the first time were some kind of issue with the ram and that's why restarting put your scores back to normal.

2.8ghz is quite slow for a 5770 on 3dmark06.

If you want an accurate result on your overclock increasing your frames, try something a bit more GPU dependent (vantage or non valve games) or increase the resolution of the benchmark.

I played bad company 2 and it crashed like 3 times.

I was about to rma the card but it plays l4d2 flawlessly 75fps all maxxed, played cs source np and war3 np.

And since it ran all those 3d mark tests without any artifacting I have to conclude its an ati driver/bc2 problem, which really sucks cause I want to play bc2.

k now im thinking of rmaing it again
crashes few seconds into EA's burnout paradise with lines like this

grey bars like that are either

a) driver issue, remove old drivers, boot into safe mode, run driver sweeper to clean em out for good, boot back into windows, download 10.2 or get the 10.3 (not sure if they are off beta yet)

b) unstable overclock on the card, if its oc'd back down the memory and core a tad.. most likely the memory though

The graphics card was at stock speeds when testing bc2. It crashed in 3 different ways:
-when I had two monitors running, the game froze and all I could see were coloured lines on both monitors
-as soon as I got into the game the screen was all black except for the hud
-when I started playing all the textures were artifacting

its easy to say rma, but how do you explain then running l4d2 all maxxed perfect at 75fps no crashing/artifacting, running cs:source all maxxed no crashing, and running all those 3d marks no problem.

im not thinking of ocing it atm i just want to know if the card crashing is a driver issue, or if i should rma it

im going to reformat and try it again, i just uninstalled my nvidia drivers from my old 8800gts and installed the catalyst ones

i wish i could install 10.3 drivers but they are win7/vista only and im running xp

Those bugs usually happen from an overheating or a bad card.

-after format card worked better but i was getting grey screen crashes with lines
-tried modifying catalyst profile to increase idle clock, mem and voltage to standard
-this fixed the screen tearing with dual monitors, the card performed better
-grey screen crashes remained, rmaing card, ordered xfx 4870 1gb
-hoping this will work out better
