 OOh.... FLAMING mad... Heard this on a Linux board. Hope it isn't true. Apparently, Microsoft is making OEM versions of XP for certain computer manufacaturers that ONLY WORK WITH THE OEM BIOS!!!!!! That's right, you heard me. They make it impossible to change your MB and keep the OS!!!!! I bet they'll make it so you can't change anything on your PC, making it a buy-a-new-one-when-you-want-to-upgrade market!!!!

Hey, Hey...
Vodka314.. Please edit your post. We do not want to offend anyone. Slurs of ANY kind will NOT be tolerated here.
Yes MS has released versions that only work with certian bios's. Is is for the MFG's like Dell, compaq and the like. In these machines they usually use propritary motherboards that cannot be changed anyways. Anyways, these machines are targeted at users that will NOT be doing much upgrading/tweaking. They are aimed at "Joe SixPack" who uses the machine for surfing the net and reading e-mails.
The retail versions are NOT locked like this. This, if it is even still happening, was just another way to STOP the illegal distribution of OEM versions of the OS. OEM versions are to ONLY be distributed with the purchase of a NEW PC.
You can change the hardware in a PC running XP. There is a limit of how many peices can be changed at once without re-activating. This limit resets itself after a set amount of time. There are more specs on this at the MS site, which I would reccomend that you read before making a judgment.
