the temps that I get at idle are
CPU 45c/113f
mobo 27c/80f
are these low enough to overclock and be OK? I plan on putting more fans in to take care of the board but I'm concerned about the CPU temp. I haven't changed anything yet but plan on it after I get the temp low enough.
Here's the run down on my system
AMD 1.2g on an Asus mobo A7A266
gforce mmx2 64mb
672mb ram
cheap CDRW
cheap DVDROM
30gb hard drive
WINXP pro
the writing on my chip is as follows
AMD Athlon
A1200 AM(S or 5 ?)3B
AVIA 0111RPDW
95182450129
Hi Welcome to the Forums.
What heatsink are you using and are you using Asus probe for the cpu temp?
That sounds about normal for the a7a266 for the temperatures. My a7a266 would run up to about 53 degrees overclocking it. The Asus probe is off by about 10 degrees. The real temp is probably closer to 35.

those temps are pretty ok for oc-ing. good thing ur concerned with your temps. slap on more fans and presto, it wud give u more heardroom to oc-ing, in regards to temps. my cpu runs at 49idle and 52full load. not really too much to burn my cpu... but still, i have to mod my case asap! anyways good luck and dont forget to have fun!

Welcome to the Forums!
Temps are something that constantly need some attention paid to them, especially when OCing AMD chips, but onboard readings are not really trustworthy: one board might show 40c when another shows 50c at the same actual temp!
There exist some fancy hardware pieces (DigiDoc, Compunurse)you can add to get accurate readings, or you can check validity by using an indoor/outdoor thermometer (cheap sob method- the way I do it!)
I have 3: two Tbirds and an XP 1800, and all of them become unstable near 50c load- anything over 47c load and I do something to cool it down.
I would suggest leaving the system where it is until you verify temps or get them down to about 40c load, which is my ballpark figure for where a chip needs to be to oc it.
The TRUE test, due to all the variation in chips and temp readings is STABILITY: if your system reads 52c load but can run for two weeks with no errors or crashes then your mobo (motherboard) is just reading temps high most likely!
A NOTE: all the temps I have listed are LOAD temps- 100% cpu load. When a cpu is at idle the temp will be much cooler, but that information is relatively useless for overclocking: if the temp is so high at idle that when you start to do something it crashes, whats the point?

I use the Asus program to get my temps. I also checked the bios and they were within one half a degree of each other.
I wasn't really planning on overclocking when I bought my stuff so my heatsink and fan are what the local store said would be ok. probably just some cheap but OK brand.
I plan to put it under full load later this week after I finish my case mods and try to get a better heatsink / fan combo. Is the Sisoft sandra a good program to put me under 100% load? Is it free?
Well off to the store I go for the good stuff.
Those temps look OK.
Try leaving the pc folding for a day or two which will put the pc under strain.

what do you mean by folding?

Folding is one of the two Distributed Computing projects that Overclockers.com has teams participating in.
The other is Seti@Home
Info on both is available:Seti (http://www.ocsetiteam.com)
and folding (http://www.overclockers.ws/folding/)
Both teams are always looking for new teammates:)

Ok after some case mods, more fans, a new heatsink fan combo I downloaded the folding program and run it all night.
Before running the folding program my temps were as follows
CPU 32C/89F
Mobo 24C/75F
I rean the folding program for about one hour and my temps went to this
CPU 34C/93F
Mobo 25C/77F
I then let it run all night and the temps were here this morning
CPU 32C/89F
Mobo 23C/73F
I think these temps are OK according to what I have read. I plan to maybe overclock later this week if these temps will be OK.
Thanks for al the help...
