So this is my first PC build, I already bought the i7-930 (microcenter for $200), OCZ gold 6x2GB ram, XFX HD 5770, gladiator 600 case, ASUS p6t motherboard. I just have trouble picking out a power supply and a CPU cooler.

I have looked around for a PSU and was wondering if the one listed would be a good buy? I plan on some overclocking and will run crossfire in the future. If you would recommend me another PSU that would be sufficient for my build if the one I listed is not good, that would be helpful.

Any recommendations on a CPU cooler (a budget one, nothings to fancy). I looked at the hyper 212 plus or Thermaltake Contac 29 or cool master n520?

Neuro,

Get another power supply, Rosewill is not a good choice. Pick one from here:

If you're going to SLI the 5770s, then 650 watts should be fine if it has the connectors. They're not a big power draw each.

hey would this power supply work with my i7 build? Can I power up my system if I crossfire XFX HD 5770 as well as do some overclocking with the i7? If I were to try to overclock the 5770 will I need more power or will it also work with this power supply?

It's not bad, you can do better. The 5770 boards draw about 100 - 110 w under stress testing in games:

Here's a link posted by Burebista, one of our top members:

Personally you might do better having one higher-end board rather than going 5770 SLI later but that can be an argumentative decision. Either way, a good 650w will run 5770s SLI or a higher end board single GPU easily. Don't buy a power supply just on price, check out more in that OC Forums lists I posted for other sales.

What you have right now can be run by a Corsair CX400w, easily.
If you want to crossfire two 5770s, you'll need a corsair 550w or better.

Good quality power supplies are rather impressive in their capabilities.

for an i7 build, even with crossfired 5770s you should be ok with a 650tx (corsair) or if you wanted more headroom the 750tx... as stated above you really dont want to buy based on price but rather quality.

as rollingthunder said, crossfired 5770s still would pale in comparison to a 5850 overclocked in some instances... if you can spare the change up front, try to grab a 5850 at least..

Get another power supply, Rosewill is not a good choice.

I'd have to disagree with that. While not one of the allstar, well recommended brands like Corsair or Seasonic, every Rosewill review I've read has been very positive, even multiple ones on JonnyGuru. Hell, here's a direct quote from a JonnyGuru review of a Rosewill PSU (although, a little bit of time ago)

Here we have this much maligned PSU brand that everyone automatically writes off as sheer crapola, that is actually kicking ass and taking names.

So I wouldn't dismiss that PSU he picked out automatically because it wasn't made by one of the well established brand.

John,

You are correct in that Rosewill has improved units but you're still guessing whether this one is a good one or not. OW didn't test this one specifically. Not so with Corsair and Seasonics, they are all good with no guesswork specific to a model.

The Corsair HX650 removes all the guesswork.

I was thinking instead of the 5770 to get a 5850 and later crossfire, do you think I should go ahead and upgrade to a 750w psu? I rather buy it now and not have to worry about it later. I read a review on johnnyguru.com that the XFX 750W Black edition power supply is good, any thoughts?

Thanks

That is a very good unit, it is a single rail version of the SeaSonic M12D with a different case and fan.

Here (http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story5&reid=184) is the review at JG

5850 in crossfire can be run by an HX650, but the adequate supply would be 750Watts. Don't skimp out on a PSU, especially if you are getting quality components in there like an expensive GPU - in this case - 2.

I recommend the Corsair HX750 for a modular PSU, Antec EarthWatts 750W or Corsair TX750 for non-modular.

EDIT: XFX Black is a recommended PSU in my list, great PSU. Scored a perfect 10 in performance, can't get any better than that :D

thanks for the advice, so you do recommend the xfx 750w black edition power supply? I was either going for that one or the silverstone strider plus 750w.
