View Full Version : Remote access program
I am using my old laptop running XP as a server from my home to torrents or files sharing to save energy while using 40 watts vs my PC 300 watts.
Any free, good, SAFE, small remote access program that you can recommend? Thank You!

Good old RDP if you're running XP Professional. You'll just need to forward port 3389.
Or, you could give TeamViewer, or LogMeIn a go - both don't require port forwarding and are minimal setup & secure.
Tried LogMeIn, but expired and asking me for $$, will try TeamViewer. thanks!

i always just use RDP. it is already built in, uses the same authentication mechanism as your windows box itself and runs at decent speed. that is pretty much all i can ask for in a remote desktop server.

Go into your Logmein account, and change the subscription for that computer from Pro Trial to free. Won't bother you for money again. :santa2:

Logmein works great. You probably hit the end of the Pro trial, but you can still use the free one with a few less features (Sound, shared folders, etc). Teamviewer is also a pretty good one. I havent used it much but from what I have used it works great.
I would recommend you to try windows desktop program for remote access needs since you are not wanting to pay for a program. But my personal concern is that free programs often limit in features but the specialized programs like RHUB http://www.rhubcom.com offer many more advanced features like firewall protection, remote reboot, remote lock computer and so on.
