I have trouble running my older apps on my system. (Poser 3.0, Painter 5.5 etc. ..)
They install fine, but when trying to run them they all give 'out of memory error' and shut down. I know W2K has no trouble with my amount of RAM (1024), so my guess is the apps don't recocgnize this amount and simply assume its not enough?

If so, is there a way to fool these apps into working anyway?

I think its a problem with the software more than a w2k problem. I would still say to make sure you have the latest updates installed for windows 2k and check out curious labs and see if they have a patch for poser. I think corel bought painter but i'm not sure so you might want to check their site.

Might be your Virtual Memory settings. Check in System Properties>Advanced>Performance. Increasing your Virtual Memory might solve your problem. Because it doesn't automatically set VM, make note of the defaults.

I checked, and it is set to:
Minimum 1536 MB
Maximum 3076 MB

So...how do I know if this is good or bad, and what it should be?:D Should I just set it to maximum?

Try this

Here is the official answer from CURIOUS LABS.

4. Question: Poser can't render high res images. Error appears "Insufficient disk space to render"
Answer = After some intense investigation we believe we have a work around. It turns out that Windows NT 4, 2000 and Windows XP must be using some space for the pagefile.sys file on the same partition that Poser is installed, to render large images. The pagefile.sys is the virtual memory or temp space for Windows. An approximate minimum would 10 MB. This amount might have to be increased for more complex scenes and animations. The maximum should be 10 MB or greater.

To modify the Virtual Memory:

Windows NT 4 = Right Click my computer. Click the performance tab. Click change. Click the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System.

Windows 2000 = Right click My computer. Select the Advanced tab. Click Performance option. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System.

Windows XP = Click Start. Right Click My Computer in the menu. Select Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Click Settings, next to Performance. Select the advanced tab. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Click the Custom size button. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System.

Poser will now be able to render up to its maximum size of 4090 pixels x 4090 pixels @ any resolution

before i try that:

Setting it to 10 gives me LESS virtual memory than I have set now, right? Should i set it lower so the program can work?

And the problem isn't rendering, the problem is the app won't start at all, just gives an 'insufficient memory' error and shuts down immediately.. Also gives the 'this program has created errors and will be shut down' dialog.

Thats what their webpage says. I would try the patch and reinstall the programs first to be sure. you can always change the amount a virtual memory on your system.

virtual memory is just garbage anyways. how many times do you actually use it.

Well, after some careful consideration and a few beers I decided to be brave and change the settings.
I set the minimum for Virtual memory to 10 as you wrote, and left the maximum at 3mb as it was.

Rebooted the system, it gave a warning: Your system is low on virtual memory, windows may assign more memory to applications if thy need it, this may cause other programs to stop working (well, words to this extent anyway, this is not a quaote :) )

and it worked!!!! i can now run Poser 3.0, Painter 5.5 and loads of other older software again!
Thanks a lot for the advice, this saved me from buying expensive upgrades. Muchos gracias, Domo Arigato!
