View Full Version : leaving PC on 24/7 & electric bill
I'd like to leave my system (see sig) on 24/7 for crunching. This will be something new to me as I usually turn off my computer before I go to bed and when I leave home for work. My question is how much would this increase my electric bill? I hoping some of you who leave your system on 24/7 would give me rough est.
I leave my 10 systems at home on 24/7 and I think my bill went from something like $35-50 per month to $50-75. Not quite double. Of course my wife and I use many other electronic devices other than the puters including an electric stove and two window ACs. Also consider that all monitors are left off when not actually in use. They are one of the biggest elec users of the whole system.
For just one or two systems I would not expect the increase to be very much.

To further back up the power usage: 6 desktops and a laptop, two crt monitors (one of which is off 99% of the time) I figure it at $10, maybe $15 a month, tops.
Leave it on, it saves wear and tear on the power button!
With one system you'll notice like a 5 dollar difference or maybe none if your going on and off.
Since turning it on requires alot of juice from the PSU turning on the heavy HDD and the fans etc.

Each PC that you have running 24/7 will be approximately equivalent to burning a 100 - 150w lightbulb 24/7 - depending on whether your box is AMD or Intel. Just remember to turn those monitors off, or your bill will really go through the roof.;)
