I've checked many various forums and haven't found a solution for the subject problem.

tried:
1) resetting settings by holding power button.
2) verified and switched audio settings to ensure HDMI audio selected.

I turned off my ps3 yesterday and everything was working. I turned on the system today and picture is fine but no sound. I switched to the yellow/red/white cables and everything works under those settings. Tv settings haven't changed and don't know what else to do. I haven't tried a different cable yet bcuz its 1am, no stores open.

From what i can figure it's either:
1) the cable went bad (but picture works, so i doubt that)
2) or some component in my ps3 went bad (something to do with hdmi)

any ideas?

1. The audio on the PS3 is fine
2. THE AUDIO ON THE PS3 IS FINE

If there was something wrong with the audio processor then you wouldn't have audio when you switched cables.

3. The HDMI output is working fine

If there was something wrong with the HDMI then you wouldn't have picture.

The problem is therefore external.

Sure... it could be the cable.

It could also be dust. Get a can of compressed air and spray it (with the TV *off* mind you!) in the HDMI port of the TV. Test it. Then try the same with the PS3.

Could also be a simple problem of cleaning the contacts on the HDMI cable. I would try these things before buying a new cable. Because if the contacts on the TV or the PS3 are dirty... then you'll just wind up having the same problem with the new cable.

ok for an update ...

i turned on my ps3 this morning and everything magically works again. Just like it magically broke, it somehow works again. I didn't even change anything or clean the HDMI contacts. I turned it on and off multiple times yesterday and that didnt work.

what could have shut-off/turned-on the sound without changing anything? Now that it works again i'm worried the same problem could persist at a later time.

PS3 to HDMI cable to where? Do you have it running through a switch, receiver, or TV?

then the TV got confused on the audio input would be my guess.
