I have an old (1997) Wisecom Modem WS_2814IM5 which worked fine on Win 95, I reformatted & installed Win 98/2, found drivers on the net & installed OK. Everytime I dial out I get a msg - Error 680, no dialtone, ensure modem is connected to phone line -. But I know that my phone line, my cabling & my dialup settings are OK, I have tried the Util’ Modem Doctor, all to no avail. If I use the Windows Phone Dialer, I can hear the modem dial but the number dialed does not respond. Can anyone help please.

go to control panel and open modems.
click over to Diagnostic tab
high light the COM port your modem is on and click More Info.
If you get more info screen with all the command/respond in the white box below then your modem driver is install properly.
If you get modem fail to respond or similiar then you didn't install the driver correctly.
OK if you get respond then that is good.
click Start and choose Find then Files or Folder.
search for a file name telephon.ini
once find just rename it to telephon.old
then clock Start and choose RUN.
Type "tapini.exe" and click OK.
now Restart computer then go back to control panel.
go in to telephony icon and make sure every thing is correct.
try again and see how it goes.
