I need the best printer for around $300-$450, tell me if i should go for a laserjet or inkjet, as i don't need colour so much.

Once I got laser, I could *never* go back to ink. Better quality, you don't run out of ink all of the time, toner doesn't smear and run like ink, and it is faster.

I have a HP 5L that I bought in 1996.

I got a Samsung ML - 4500 Laser and I love it. Lets see I've used it for like a year without changing the ink (I use it often since I have school). They are a money saver! The only downside is that you won't be printing color with them. I'd say if your going black and white definitely go laser.

You can find them used sometimes...HP, while building crappy desktop systems, does a pretty good job with printers. Ofcourse, you gotta get a decent one...the 1100's are pretty much horrible when it comes to paper jams...

I've seen used Laserjet 4's, 5L's, etc for decent prices. You have to actually check it out though, test print, etc, and see if you can get a warranty...but it is possible to get a good used laserjet.

Case in point:
We have an Epson Actionlaser1000 that uses the same drivers as the hp laserjetII yet is alot more compact. Had it since '93, and its only on its second toner cartridge. Works awesome too...never given trouble.

You can do a new laser for 3-4hundred, but I'd personally shy away from the HP 1100's...they're kinda difficult sometimes.

I'm all about Epson, myself. Dirt cheap, and relatively high quality. I got a Color Stylus 740 for $99 on sale a year and a half ago, it's done a great job with no errors or other weirdness. It's not as good as a nice $300 HP, but it works fine(if a bit slow on full color pages).

I avoid lasers like the plague, personally.Fast, yes, but black and white only is kinda pointless to me. And I'm not trading my car for a color laser! :D And the cartridges cost an arm and a leg.

But if you know you won't need color ever, might as well go laser.
