Made with layers of clear packaging tape. This was made for a cel-t 1.2 @ 1.6+GHz. I noticed about a 2 deg. C drop in overall temps with the IHS off and it maybe added 20 MHz to the total. I am extreme and they always come off anymore. I precut the layers with a razor blade(Exacto would be more effective) on the roll and peal them off as neccesary.
Wow thats a cool idea! Tape for a shim :D
Although the part I don't get is how your lowering your temperature by adding a shim because the shim would remove some contact and add more heat. Plus you need like lots of weight on it to get good heat transfer.

The thermal conductivity of plastic is very low and the base part of the cpu does not create much heat! It works very well for the tualatin core. If the shim was metal it may add to the heat problem but it is not. The old copper shims on the old tbirds added heat back to the core but with this organic base design and plastic shim that does not happen to a large degree.
Sorry for bringing up an older post but, about how many pieces of tape did you use?

I am also starting to get interested in doing this. Will the glue on the tape be a problem when it gets hot?
