Anyone here play Heroes of Newerth? I've been playing it since the beta became open to the public a couple days ago and I've been having a lot of fun with it. If you haven't heard of it check it out: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/

Tried playing it once in the closed beta, was really looking forward to it. But, since I've never played DOTA, I had no idea what was going on at all, and most players you get grouped with aren't very friendly to new people who don't know what they're doing. So I only played it once, and gave up.

I got lucky, a couple of my friend have been playing it for a little while now and they taught me the basics. Its a really hard game though.

Horrible learning curve + unforgiving community = hard for new players to join.

However, past that point it's a very fun, competitive game.

Yup thats my experience exactly. With some of the easier heroes, such as night hound or which slayer, I find that I contribute to the team and do very well. When I play a more complex hero I feed too much and get told to stay afk in base lol.

Actually, it's even worse than that at higher levels, because generally the simpler heroes are the least helpful in team situations. I find it odd that you say witch slayer is a simple hero, since he isn't the easiest to play (versus night hound, with perma invis lol).

Especially if you play banned draft, which is IMO the most team-oriented/competitive style of play, people get very angry if you don't pick the one hero they need to balance out their team.

I have always been creating my own games and use the banning style. I usually set myself up to either be the person banning (and either picking 1st or 2nd), or as the person below the banner so I get one of the top picks and thus don't destroy temp composition.

Witch Slayer is much more difficult than night hound but I've been moderately success with him. Sense I'm new to the game I'd say that his simpler than others. I'd also argue that NH is pretty useful in team situations. His cloud is great at silencing and reducing damage your team takes in. I've found that he can be very powerful late game. Like I said, I'm still a new and haven't played in any high rating games.
