just had to vent, i just got a 1.0 GHz 133 FSB (model SL52R), popped it in, and it didn't work!!! I've done many installations before, and this one went smoothly. I'm careful to handle the CPU only while grounded, and to not get any thermal paste on the pins. It was just DOA. Poopy. Now I have to wait forever to do an RMA...
someone comfort my wounds. ;)
Are you sure its the chip?
Is it a new assembled PC or just a chip swap?
Take a magnifying glass and inspect the core for any cracks or something.

What board are you using for that chip?

The CUSL2 in my sig. In case you're wondering, no that is not a Tualatin processor... It's is a normal FC-PGA PIII. Just a newer stepping (and higher voltage) version of the old 1.0 GHz.
Seems like a dead chip  Where did you buy it from? If it was local just go back to them and get another chip and complain. They will always return it in a day or so as well unless their return policy is really bad where they send it to Intel or just give you a lower class chip then RMA it back to Intel.

hehe. I got it from e-bay, but it has a 90 day warranty... I dunno about this e-bay stuff, though. :eh?:
I would never buy a motherboard or a chip from Ebay unless I was very desperate for a new component and the seller's feedback was lots of positive and lots of stuff sold..
Oh well I would just RMA it to Intel not the seller. Seller may blame it on something else and it can carry on (I've seen it happen how about to the moderator, Shadow).

the only reason i looked to ebay to find it was so I knew exactly what model i was getting. Even though newegg.com has a picture of the model I wanted, I called and they said nothing is definite about which one i get.

I guess that's a good explination since the 1000 P3 are only being sold as EB mostly now.
But I ask why trade an EB for an E?

Question: how exactly do i go about doing an RMA to intel? Will they take it back?
If its retail there is a waranty that the chip is guaranteed about 2 years I believe and RMA is "Return Mechandise Authorization..."
All you need to do is call Intel and they ask you a few questions then they give you a number and an address to ship to them.
You then take the RMA number write it on the sides of the box then mail it to the address they give you with only the chip in an anti-static bag.

actually Yodums, the one i got IS an EB. I was just trading my EB (cC0 stepping) for the cD0 stepping one. Mine doesn't overclock the best.
and as for the RMA, it is an OEM that came in exactly that, an antistatic bag.
OEM eh? Call Intel and see if the chip is still avaliable for a RMA.
Actually there's no such thing as a cD0 EB chip. cD0 only exist in the 1000E unless that's what your trying to say.
If not then return it to the seller.

No Yodums, it is a cD0 stepping 1000MHz EB.
here's Intel's spec sheet for ya: http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/p3p.htm
it's the SL52R.
Heh then... Good luck rmaing it.

Yep, they do exist, I have one of those wonderful wonderful chips, in the Coppermine-T format. There are others out there that are not Cumine-T, though. I got mine through an RMA... my first chip had a bad L2 cache, I had my new chip a day after I sent mine in, Intel is very good about RMAs.
