Alright, I was cleaning out my room today and found an old set of computer speakers. From what I remember they didn't sound like complete junk, so I decided to disassemble them and see if I can't use them later.

The sub is a bit interesting. Everything about it looks normal except that it has two sets of connections. Both lead back to the built in amp in separate cables, and it says 4ohm on the back. How exactly is this supposed to be wired?

Also, I want to check, but those large coil things that you find in amps; they convert AC to DC, right?

Hi,

That might be a dual voice coil sub (dvc). You can connect them in series or parallel.

Series connection gives you 8 ohm impedance and a parallel gives you 2 ohm.
(+) (-)
(-) ------ (+) for series

(+) ------ (+)
(-) ------ (-) for parallel

And the coil, on the output of the amp or maybe you are referring to the power transformer?

If copper coil on the output, usually paralleled with a resistor, is for inductive loads.
As you increase the length of speaker cable
it increases the inductance. I could be wrong on that.

If you are referring to the coil on the power transformer, its basically a step down transformer
to lower the voltage from 240VAC to desired AC voltage.
