I am new to the game and need some help please to overclock,
i have the following parts

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
CORSAIR 6GB (3X2GB) DDR3 1600MHZ XMS3
INTEL I7 930 2.8GHZ 8MB
SAMSUNG HD103SJ SPINPOINT F3
A copy of both WINDOWS XP and 64 bit WINDOWS 7, still like xp, but i think you will say move to 7.
i have done mild over clock with an Asus board before and found that one not to bad, but the gigabyte is a bit harder to do, or it may just be me? Watch this space and see what a hash i can make of it?
do i need the ET6 and smart 6 software on the system?
anyone able to help please.

Welcome man!!!

Take a read of the guide linked in my signature for your i7, that should get you going at minimum. If you have any questions, post on back!

overclocking should really be done in the bios until the last couple hundred Mhz for benchmarking (aka - likely not for you).

the software that comes with the mobos are usually for some tweaking while already logged into the system.. everything they can do you can do via the bios by hand but it does take some more time to do

One of the first things I would suggest doing is entering bios, finding your memory timings and setting them manually to manufacturer specs or even looser to a 9-9-9-24-2t as well as setting the DIMM voltage to 1.65, which is spec for most mem for the 1366 platform.

after that its trial and error..following the guide as EarthDog suggested will surely get you to the right settings you would want..i would say that if you do not have an aftermarket heatsink for the CPU that you try not to go over like 3.6GHz as you're reaching the heat limits of the stock heatsink..

and :welcome: to the forums!

here's my settings for

gigabyte X58 ud3r rev2
intel i7 930 @4.3ghz
g.skill 6gb ddr3 ram
