Can an ATX PSU fit into an AT case?

Probably. The catch is that ATX and AT PS's use different kinds of power switches. ATX's need a "Momentary-On" switch, while AT PS's use a "Spade Switch."

What are the differences between the different switches?

The AT power button is hardwired into the PS and is an off/on switch operating at 120V. The ATX power button connects to a header on the motherboard and operates at board voltage (not sure if it it is 5 or 12 V DC). With an AT case you can sometimes replace the "Turbo" switch which is a DC off/on with a momentary DC switch connecting it to the power switch header on the board and use it as your power switch. Hope this helps. You will also have to modify the back of the case to allow mounting of an ATX board.

I have done exactly this with an old K6-2 450(@500).

Works fine.
