cursor is alternately changing from an hourglass to a cursor in about 2 second intervals. My system was fine and did not do this until about an hour ago when I deleted Ulead video studio
and the nvidia capture drivers.
I have subsequently upgraded to dx8.1 and the latest
nvidia drivers. It still does this when I close out all programs
except systray and explorer.
I really don't want to format......Any ideas are appreciated.

I have put back dx8.0 (thanks to dxbuster)and the 21.81 drivers and my games work fine again(another story).I've also imported a copy of the registry exported prior to the current problem and...........
Even with all programs closed (except systray and explorer) after a minimal amount of activity the cursor turns into an hourglass every 2 or 3 seconds. If I hit ctralt dlt and then cancel out
it will stop temporarily.
It seems as if there is a program trying to run in the backround .I just can't figure out what's going on and it's driving me crazy!

It would appear that something in your registry is looking for something from Ulead Studio. Back up your registry(just in case), then using regedit, look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software, see if you can find mention of Ulead, and delete it from your registry.
Hope this helps.

I checked the registry and there were at least 15 entries. That's the last time I assume a programs uninstaller does a good job.
I deleted all the entries except one. It's in the main folder-CLSID-
with a number of sub folders. The entry reads C:program files\
ulead systems-------.ax.When I delete this one it just keeps coming back.
Deleting the other entries has helped...the symptom only
appears during and after defragging the hdd.A quick reboot and no problem.

Stool,thanks for your help!

p.s.any ideas on removing the last file?

Go into My Computer and see if there is a folder still hanging around in the C: or Program Files. Thats the first place that I usually check if I have the same problem that you are having. Also if that does not work try going into Start-Programs-Accesories-System Tools-System Information-Tools-System Configuration Utility. Then check to see if your old program that you deleted is trying to start in there. If you still see it and it is checked, then uncheck it and it should solve your problem. Hope that helps.

One other possibility I can think of. Start>Run and type msconfig, and check to see if you can find any mention of Ulead in the startup files. Uncheck the box if you find any.

Thanks guys...
The only reference left is the registry entry that won't delete.
I guess I'll live with the problem until I'm ready to format
and switch to xp.
