its possible you have a problem in your network config, do you have the same set of protocols/services/clients setup on both machines? also can you access the files of one from the other and vice versa?
need to know about your setup. what os? also you need to have microsoft file and print sharing enabled on one pc to for the other box to see it
well ive got the windows 98se networking settings set right, and i can transfer files both ways, and i can play games through the lan fine but only if i specifically type in the ip address... it dosen't show up on the list of servers, and this problem is only for one of the PCs. i guess it's no big deal if you can always type in the ip of the comp you're looking for...
you havve to make sure the ips are the same. for example
Machine 1: ip: 10.1.10.23
Machine 2: ip: 10.1.10.24
just make sure all the numbers are the same except the las colum
Make sure both machines are under the same "workgroup".
Once you've done that you should be able to see the computers.
Sometimes it takes a little time before they show up.

You also might want to search for your hosts file.
and add the other computer in it.
you will see the local address of 127.0.0.1 just add below it.
example : 192.168.0.100 game1
192.168.0.101 myserver
in NT its located in the ETC sub directory.
it does not have an extention.
My other question, are you using a hub/switch or a cross-over cable?
If your using TCP/IP as your protocol be sure that your subnet masks are the same.
If your using a cable/DSL router, the DHCP should take care of all of this for you.
Also, same brand name of the NIC. I try to stick with good names like 3Com or Intel.

Ping them first. Go Start>Run>, then type> command, then in the dos window type > ping, then space and your other comp IP address, push Enter. This way you'll see if you have any hardware problems. If they get connected thae it's your configurations problem, if not, the it's cards or cable.
Good luck.

Did you get that working??
don't forget about your subnet. Make sure is 255.255.255.0

Actually, it doesn't really matter so long as they are both the same.
