View Full Version : 9800GX2 Set up

The 9800GX2 has 2 cores of 128 shaders, so a total of 256 cores. So that means it should produce more PPD than my GTX 260-216 correct?
Also, is the set-up for Folding on the 9800GX2 any different than setting up a single core GPU for Folding?
Thanks

I believe that you have to run two GPU clients, one on each core, to get the full benefit of the GX2 cards. Neither one will outperform the GTX260, but together they'll put out more points.

Interesting. I thought maybe there was a way to run the GPU client like one would on a multi-core CPU.

Nope, the GPU can't use SLI, which is how the two cores in a GX2 are "connected". Although since the later driver versions, you no longer have to switch the SLI off.

So now that I'll have a 9800GX2 in addition to my current GTX260, I'll have to run three instances of the GPU FAH? One for the GTX260 and one each for the two 9800GX2 cores?
Well, however I do it, as long as I can add a total of 256 Cuda cores to my Folding PPD.

I thought the GTX260-216 was the best deal in terms of price/PPD but that was before I knew of the 9800GX2.I assume they are comparing stock clocks in that list cause my oc'd 260s net about 8900 to 9500 ppd on average each
Looking forward to getting mine. Sad thing is I used to have one. :bang head I hate buying stuff I've already owned, but 10K+ PPD for $130 is too hard to turn down.

Yea, the GX2 is nice. Mine is stock and it pulls around 10k PPD where my stock 260 pulls around 8k PPD if I remember right.
My only qualm with the GX2, at least the BFG model I have, is that it dissipates a lot of power and exhausts a good deal of the hot air into the case. Be prepared to run without the cover or mod in some extra fans to pull that hot air out =)
Good luck chucker =) PM me if you have issues with that beast, I struggled with mine for a bit before it started to behave.

I needed dummy plugs and had to fiddle with my display setting quite a bit to get all 3 in my sig to work.

You will probably still need dummy plug for the 2nd Fah GPU client to run on Win 7 on the GX2 I think if you have Monitors plugged into GPU-1 and GPU-3

Yea, the dummy plug was the annoying part. Needed it for a while, then for some reason it wouldn't work with it in, and now I have 2 clients going w/o a dummy plug (vista64) :screwy: No idea why, but its working and I'm not going to mess with it unless I have to =)
That'll close the gap between us... if not completely it'll be 100 years till I catch ya!

I'm having a brain fart here guys.
the 9800gx2's...average ppd's are 9700ish..is that per core or per card?
I'm thinking about picking up 2 of these cards. They should put out roughly 18k ppd together? Sorry it's late
GIXXERGUY6
07-12-10, 04:59 PM
Per Card.
Ok another question.
I'm swapping out 2 9800gtx+'s for 2 9800gx2's. All I have to do is shut down the wu's swap cards and start back up again? Drivers should be the same? Then just add 2 more gpu instances?
You'll have to reinstall the drivers so they pick up the two new gpus.

Pictures will come sometime today :D
