So im doing this project for my class for the end of the semester and i cant decide what way to go ...(im wiring a highschool btw)

I need to know whats the best solution for a user group of about 500 users...money is not an option, wont be an option...

switches, firewalls, routers??? what should we use? we will also have to take group policies into consideration since with hs kids we run the run of getting viruses from them downloading crap.

Were trying to configure it as if everyone had their own laptop. what would be the right way to go about this? School is 4 stories.

if budget is not an issue get a cisco 2900 series router... a 6500 series firewall and 11 3560-x 48-ports cisco switches...

imo we need more info.. like how secure you want the network to be.. do you want to monitor what the students are doing or to what website they are going... Do you want all those 500 to be able to comunicate with each other? or you want to make specific groups? do you want the students to have individual logins? What kind of does the school have? any of those computers going to be wireless? How do you want to install software? Do you want gigabit speed?

indeed.

Also to do Group policies, you are going to need a domain and therefore a domain controller (usually a server).

Are you going with 500 students or does the 500 include staff. If so what will the staff have access to and what will the students have access to? Will you be hosting e-mail or anything like that?

OBJECT! OBBBBBBBBBJECT!

Anywho all you need is for somebody to hook up a T1 line, connect a switch (or switches) to that, setup static IP and run the wires. (Over the ceiling along the same router as the electrical lines for the lights would do. Then set yourself up a jack.)

I would go with a couple of servers, 2-3 domain controllers, are you going to do any kind of email? what about users profiles?..500 users. Have you thought about keeping all the computers updated? May want to look into WSUS.

not for the OP, but DMVPN is your friend, setup the biggest 2 offices as the DMVPN hubs, put em all on the same domain, could even toss in a call manager, and a unity server for VOIP and voicemail. other 3 offices would be 'spokes' but could inter-connect at will (via GRE/IPSEC tunnels) and the voice traffic would work assuming decent ISPs at all sites. Toss in some FXO modules at each office, setup to ring to a front desk, add in the Cisco Console Attendent software and you have your receptionists well covered (plus configure the phone directory in the call manager). Have a frac-T1 sent to each of the DMVPN hubs for long distance calling, ironically very similar to what my employer is running :D

If we can do it on a non-profit budget, then you should be able to manage with some doctor offices :D
