from what I understand 2k is not as good for games, but it is a MUCH more stable OS. I would not use win9x by choice for anything....

As for the upgrade, you are better off doing a fresh install. An upgrade always leaves behind a lot of files that the new OS does not need. Backup, format, and install...

As for drivers, you will need the latest via 4in1's (http://www.viahardware.com/download/index.shtm), and the latest vidcard drivers from Nvidia (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows2000), other than that 2k should have all the drivers you need...(your 98 drivers will not work with 2k, too different of an OS)

Check the HCL (Hardware Compatibilty List) at Microsoft and get any drivers you need before installing: burn to a cd, put on another drive, whatever.

Also: I have the Upgrade edition of Win2K Pro, BUT you do NOT need to upgrade: do a clean install from the cd and it will ask you for the install cd from your previous licensed version of windows if it does not find it on the hard drive.

Upgrades bad, clean installs GOOD!

Yes you should install your OS at default clock speed. Another thing you might find is that Win2k is a little more picky about stability when it comes to overclocking. Which means that you might not be able to overclock as high in Win2k as you were able to in Win 98.

A note that goes against normal wisdom: I have one system that responds badly to overclocking after the os is installed. However, installing while it is oc'd is problem free! I don't understand it, but I don't have any stability problems with it at all.

This is one out of five overclocked systems I have here, though- in fact it is the only time I've seen or heard of a pc like that!

On oc stability with Win2K: I get excellent results and no crashes unless I am tweaking, as a rule: I think it is that 2000 is extremely stable, and therefore it is more noticeable if the hardware isn't stable.

Win9x could run for days in an unstable condition; in fact, stability is rare for 9x!

In its normal un-overclocked state, Windows 2000 is the smoothest OS that I have run. If I were to upgrade from Windows 98, 2000 would be what I would upgrade to, not XP. They are finally starting to have all the drivers for 2000 now. As for the OC'ing aspect of 2000, I have not heard as many success stories in the forums from the guys with 2000 or XP.

You require more minerals!!!

It's amazing but when I read that sig of yours, I think I actually heard the Zerg voice in my head saying that.

Is there such a thing as too much SC?

PS... How long will they drag out the WarCraft III thing??? OK.. times up already, just put the stupid game out will ya?

Now back to your regular scheduled program.

I noticed when I went to 2K I didn't get as much oc as with 98, but do I care when compared to the stability, um...

well sometimes yes and sometimes no, but most of the time no.

LOL, thats funny. WCIII is supposed to be out later this year. Like say September. But then again isnt that what they said last year. I know that the original delay was supposedly cuased by the crash of 3DFX. Blizzard worked very closely with them and when they went under they had to redo the game to fit the other brands of cards more closely. At least that is the speculation that I had heard through the grapevine.
