OMG This virus is wasting my time. Please help?

I recently did a clean installation on my Windows XP pc and now it's already infected with BackDoor.Hugipon. I have AVG, Avira, Spybot, and HiJack This installed (basically for the first two I have just left their windows open as they keep popping up to tell me how ****ed my PC is..).
The file that is consistently mentioned is C:\WINDOWS\system32\_logon.scr. I try to 'move virus to the vault' for these programs but it appears to do nothing (i'm no expert but I think I have read that the file that's infected is an important registry one.
I've looked on the net but can't seem to find any concrete solutions. It would be appreciated if somebody could PLEASE help me out here!

First, I'd install malwarebytes. It's more popular for malware stuff these days than spybot.

Then, I'd go into safe mode and try to run scans with malwarebytes as well as avira while in safe mode.

If you aren't in safe mode, the files are in use and you won't be able to clean them out (that's why move to vault isn't doing anything).

First of all, you should never have more than ONE anti-virus installed at one time. Keep that in mind, pick one you like, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

Like IMOG recommended, Download Malwarebytes Anti-malware Here from CNet (http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button)
Install, then update to the latest version. Run a quick scan. Remove everything that is found.

Once completed, I recommend clearing out your restore points. If you need help, just ask, and I'll explain.

There are other steps, I can advise you on, but I'm just keeping it quick..Also download CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) which will remove files and cookies you don't need. It will help speed things up a bit..

As for your Hijack this, I'd like to see it again after running Malwarebytes...

I can read the HJT logs...I've had several years virus removal experience. Currently have a side business doing just that.

Two virus software versions can interfere with each other. They are recommended to run one antivirus, one spyware and one firewall.

In my experience, I've only had to reformat one drive. Most viruses are just annoyances nowadays...There are very few true tough ones out there...

If you go that route, do yourself a favor and create a service pack disc first - that way you can install the service pack prior to connecting to the internet and reduce the chances of getting reinfected.

Yes contention, because av's typically enable on-access scanners by default. If you aren't doing on access scanning with both, carrying two wouldn't hurt. (I still wouldn't carry two)

BTW, I can read a HJT log with the best of them. ;) I'd rather have him run the automatic scans correctly, then post a HJT log if his problem still exists tho. :)

Firstly I got rid of Avira. If there was one virus-protecting program I would get rid of it would be the more annoying one haha.
So I restarted in safe mode and used Malwarebytes and CCleaner.

I really don't want to do a clean/fresh installl again lol cos I've installed all the programs, set up the email/internet, Firefox add-ons .etc. Do you really think it's the only way I can get rid of it? HP doesn't give you a disc - it's on the drive..

Firstly I got rid of Avira. If there was one virus-protecting program I would get rid of it would be the more annoying one haha....


You got rid of the "good" one.

I have yet to see AVG effectively remove a heavily infested PC that Avira successfully has...

All I can really say is that I have worked on infected PCs with AVG 9.0 that were installed by the customer prior or during they noticed the infection and would unsuccessfully remove it. In some cases I'd get Avira installed without manually removing any of the virus files and Avira would run and remove the infected files. The customer ends up switching over to Avira.

AVG is alright, but just average, imo.

Okay so i got rid of AVG and reinstalled the obnoxious but "good" Avira. I currently have the infected logon.scr in Quarantine. What can I do with it now to get it off my pc?

Delete it from quarantine - quarantine is like the recycle bin, it just hangs onto stuff so you can check it out before deleting it for good. This logon.scr file needs to be deleted.

I'd also delete this registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Alertere (Backdoor.Hupigon) -> No action taken.

If you haven't done it yet, you should also run Avira from safe mode - running ccleaner and malwarebytes in safe mode is good, but neither actually scan for and remove viruses. Avira from safe mode should ensure you are clean.
