View Full Version : DON'T buy GTA IV through steam...

So GTA IV just got "updated" to 1.0.6? Basically the latest version has ruined the game for me. Here are a few reasons why:

Many cut scenes now don't render meaning I can't actually play through the campaign

My maximum fps is now all the way down at 31fps compared to the 52 it was before (the beach in the place you start and average is now down at 21fps compared to the 34 before)

They've changed the way it renders things so now I get a delay of about 1/2 a second when I turn round before objects actually render

I can't use mods because SparkIV and other modding programs juts don't work

There are quite a few more things but these are the things that are REALLY (something)ing me off :(

As far as I can tell there's no way of getting around this without buying the non-steam version (without going into "other" methods).
If there is a way to downgrade please tell me, the game has been destroyed for me.

So yeh, I would strongly recommend you stay away from the steam version until they've fixed this issue. Basically similar problems that TF2 is now suffering from but that's for a different thread.

Try going into the games properties settings, change it to not automatically update.
Then apply a lower version patch if possible.
Try one from here: http://grandtheftauto.filefront.com/files/Grand_Theft_Auto_San_Andreas/GTA_IV;10773

No idea if this will work.

That would work if the latest patch didn't remove the social club thingy. Basically I can install a lower patch but I just can't load the game up :(

What happens when you install 1.0.5.0 and try to run it.
Oh what fun this game is...

This game ****es me off. I can't play it on W7. It just cycles through the character art whenever I load a game. It says loading for infinity (or as long as I've let it go). I've searched and searched for resolution, and I see a lot of people complaining about it, but no joy for me.

Screw rockstar in general. POS game.

It is loading slightly faster with the latest patch for me, about 45 seconds. With the original version it took about 3 and a half minutes to load.

I have it on Steam, but haven't played it recently. I ran it maxed out on my rig in the signature (except for textures, not enough video memory :rain:), and it ran smooth at 1680x1050 on Windows 7, though I don't know the fps.

IIRC, it took a little less than a minute to load.

Did you check if this is a known problem, tinymouse? Maybe you're just an isolated issue. :p

Well just loaded it. Took 19 seconds to load, I'm happy about that.

Like I said I could max it out but would have to drop the view distance when in the city to about 60 or my fps would just be waaay to low.

Thanks for the heads up. Just realized it's on sale on steam for $7.50, and at that price I could live with the problems I've already heard of, but for this it doesn't sound like it's even worth that much.

I got my copy via direct2drive.

It was a fiver over here in the UK. I wish I hadn't paid that. I've been denied a refund which now makes this my first bad experience with buying a product via steam.

I've heard of this Direct2Drive thing, what is it? Is it similar to steam?

Consider yourself having all the benefits of steam, but without the centralized UI and ease of use. You have toe download the games via a website, and then install them yourselves and occasionally run into issues... something that almost never happens with steam.

But, given a game like GTA, buying it on steam is a bad idea. ;)

Rockstar has always sucked at making games (I mean this purely in the game engine perspective, I can't comment elsewhere). I just know that all their games have been buggy as hell.

How recent was this update? I don't have gta iv, but I do have episodes from liberty city on steam and it runs fine.

No wonder the game was on sale at a super low price... they were selling broken copies ;-)/

I think the update was about a week or two ago, could be longer.
All I know is that I'm finding it impossible to run it on a lower version.

Yes this games has always been buggy but it wasn't this bad. I can just about play it on the lowest settings now at about 24fps minimum and about 36fps maximum. Really depressing... not even Crysis is that bad...

Rockstar seems to be notoriously bad with PC ports...I just bought GTA San Andreas and it crashes about once every two hours which sucks when I haven't saved for 3 missions.

That's interesting. I played through the entire thing on PC without a hitch.

I had GTA4 installed via steam 1.0.4 for ever no problems. Then I started getting an error saying Service Pack 1 required.. which I have. RE-install did nothing. Just bought 'Stories', does the same thing. WTF. Thats said I've played the game for over 200hrs, I need my fix!

Less than maximum settings. It won't look as shiney which is the main reason I brought GTA IV for myself anyway :/

Oh heavens no, it's not that bad!

After playing GTA4 at a high resolution with giant textures, the console version looks like a bad joke. PC FTW.

Trust me I would always agree with you in any other situation but you have to pay >2x the price for a comptuer that can play it at the same framerate as a console.

Real disappointing seeing yet another company crap on us :/

Ancient argument. It was made very well known in early reviews that the game ran like a dog, and GTA on PC has always been buggy. I knew full well what I was getting into, and its no surprise new crap keeps popping up.

Why isn't that cpu overclocked!?!?!?!

I believe that's the fifth time that's been mentioned :P
The honest answer? I don't know how to overclock it. I don't want to overclock the RAM at all since it already gets slightly to warm for my liking.

Apparently I can overclock without bumping up my RAM? I have no idea how to so this thread here (http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=636714) is my plea for help :/

Feel free to chip in :p I really want to bump this up to 3.0-3.2GHz (no higher, I chose silence over performance with this rig) but I just don't know how to.

Give me an old Athlon or a shiney P2 or P3 and I'll have that running at ludicrous speed in no time :D

I bought it on steam because my dog ate my playdisk... Went from 60+ FPS to barley playable at first, now its ok. But I amagine the same problems would occur with or without steam. The problem is the hackers,, thats why there are patches...
make sure you got the newest Nvidia drivers or whatever and adjust the setting also.

why would social club affect it not being able to run at maximum settings?
if i do maximum settings i dont think it would be a problem with any thing but i doubt i will, i dont like how alot of settings make the games look.
