O-ring lubricant?

What should I put on the o-rings before putting a system together to keep them from drying out?

I usually use a silicon grease for normal applications, or Vaseline if I'm out of that (most o-rings these days aren't rubber), but will it get crud in the distilled water if I use it for a computer?

I suppose I could use distilled water, but some sort of oil/grease would probably be better if the system can handle it...

(I'm surprised no one's asked this yet...at least there weren't any topics found when I searched thread titles)

Thanks!
