i hope this is the right area to ask this question

i built a pc gamer about 2 years ago works great
my question is can i build a server to play my games on instead of paying a server company a monthly payment.

i have call of duty world at war and battlefeild bad company 2 now,is there a way to build my own server two play these two games on line in a public server that i have sitting right here beside my pc.

im very sorry if this is a stupid question i just dont know and i am starting to studyup on this to see if it is doable.

can anybody explain the steps to take to do this?

thanks from killer454

First of all, you can't host servers for Bad Company 2. Dice has decided to offer dedicated servers, but it has to be rented from "authorized hosts." This allows them better control over stats, cheating, and ensuring gaming quality.

WaW I think is a bit tricky. You have to edit config files to get it to host a server and even then I am not sure if it is listed in the server browser or just connectible by IP address from console.

If you want to host a server for games that support it, you want to build a computer that focuses on CPU speed and heavy in the RAM. Also, your internet connection would most likely not be able to handle hosting a server, so you would have to purchase a internet speed that could handle the type of traffic you would be getting. In addition, you would probably want to get a static IP. I use to host a server for a Half-Life mod on one of my spare computers about 8 years ago, but servers require a lot more bandwidth and hardware now.
