25fps in diablo2 w gf3??

I downloaded a program called fraps. I get around 50-60 average fps in Max Payne at 1280*1024 with everything on highest detail, that looks about right. With Ghost Recon it says I get about 40fps on average (once again everything is at its highest). On diablo 2 i'm getting a steady 25fps... what is up with that?

Well DiabloII was mainly designed for vodoo cards and when you install it, it specifically says that the game might not work right on a nvidia card. What os do you have and what drivers do you have?

Shouldn't bother you much anyway, since it's 2d game with fixed POV, so framerate is of little importance. I ran D2 comfortably on my TNT without ever feeling like it was lagging or stuttering.

I have xp and the latest nvidia drivers

Try using the drivers that came with the card becuase the newest nvidia drivers aren't 100% on WinXP yet. If you do that you'll probably loose some points in other games but you can see if that's the problem. But like Slim said i wouldn't worry about it. Obviously your card can handle more demanding games than that but if you don't even notice the difference in D2 then there's no reason to try and fix it.

I get the same thing here- I think the problem is Fraps, not the game. It does weird stuff like that in some other old games I have too.

Is D2 really even in 3d? I turn on 4xAA and don't see any difference, either in FPS or picture quality...

Diablo2 is 2D

But it should take advantage of D3D for better lighting, and smoother scrolling (if it's set up right)

so it is 2D with some 3D calls to D3D? How do you makes sure you enable the D3D effects? I just got this game last week for the first time, any info at all about D2 would be much appreciated:)

When you install the game it'll show your video card and say either the 2dspecs or the 3dspecs of your card. Just make sure you click on the 3dspecs and it'll do the rest itself.

I don't remember, I hope I did! The trees and stuff look like they are in quasi-3D so I guess it is. Just wish I could raise the resolution tho... pretty fun game, I like it a lot so far.

That game rocks, it is the reason why I keep my old V2 in my rig....it is Glide-based so none of the Geforce2 cards can really make it justice....jeez the scrolling/fading looks nice:D

yeah definitely glide based, run d2 vid test for it, an it will show you right there.. if you have a voodoo based card, the extra option of glide will be given.. (the better option for that game)
otherwise you'll be limited to 2d or 3d d3d... its one reason why i still have my v3 3000, and am not convinced about this other somewhat cheapie card for a temporary till i can get something better.. arghhh why oh why did microsloth skip out on glide support for XP ?? .. grrrr.. buttholes... hehe
oh if you like d2... GET THE EXPANSION.. it makes it heaps better !!!.. although v1.09 makes it alot easier for normal difficulty, geeezuz you wait till you get to nightmare.. wont think its easy then.. hehe..

uh, I almost forgot:p Like I was saying, get a V2 to enjoy this game to the max, it really doesn't play as well on NVidia cards, and besides you could probably get one of those for free...:cool:

You try pressing enter, then type in fps?
That will enable the ingame FPS counter, and with my GeForce2 MX400, I get 150 FPS with most graphical options turned off, and 70FPS with them all on.

I use the Detonator 23.12 drivers. Running D2 1.09d on Windows 2k Pro SP2.

I had D2 running in Glide on my old Voodoo5, and now in D3D with a GeForce2, and there is no difference graphically... originally, when DiabloII was first released, all the smooth scrolling, fading, and colored lighting effects were only for the glide users, but that's because 3Dfx was still alive and well... but when they went under, Blizzard implimented ALL of those things into the D3D mode

the voodoo's don't have good D3D support, so I'm sure if you try D2 in D3D on a voodoo, it wont look as good as a voodoo in glide, or a geforce in D3D

heh, when the game was in development it was going to be ONLY glide (i.e. no D3D). obviasly they put D3D in before it was released. and the ENTIRE game is 2d, however the quasi-3d effect in D3D and Glide is because rather then scrolling the whole screen, it scrolls objects based on where they're placed, so a tree that's right in front of the camera moves faster then the rest of the screen (and you can turn it off in options, it's called "Perspective"). and I heard somewhere that it locked the framerate to 24, but it might not be true.

To achieve the highest possible speed and graphics in diablo2, simply download and run a Glide Wrapper then select glide from the Diablo setup. You will get 30fps consistantly and even higher end effects. Glide overhauls the D3D engine in Diablo2.
