So for the past few days my system seems to lose touch with the DNS server that my ISP is supplying (checked off obtain via isp)

However, even when I force a DNS into the properties of the v4 and/or even the v6 properties I still fail to connect to the dns.

What hardware might cause all of this junk to happen.. its very odd that from time to time its perfectly fine, but I would think that forcing it to use an IP address of a working DNS server that I should connect to it, even if its slow.

Ideas, suggestions.

Using a linksys modem docsis 2.0 (dont remember which one, im at work), NETGEAR WPN824 rangemax router and forget which pci card, but its a netgear g compliant one

I haven't called my ISP yet since I'm hoping its hardware related so I can fix it w/o being on the phone with another country or listening to elevator music while they pretend to look up information for me

As always, help is appreciated!

ok if you directly connect computer to cable modem does it still drop?

What cable co?

I know Comcast has disliked my Ipcop/Smoothwall router a few times over the 4 years I have been in my current building and when that starts up, I usually have to direct connect for a couple of days.

I haven't been able to try direct connect yet.. laptop is charging to test tonight. Modem/router are in the basement.

But even with manual DNS entries it should "force" the modem to use that DNS provider shouldn't it?

EDIT: Comcast is my ISP

From what I have seen (long enough ago that I have forgotten exact details) my router was being forced on and off its DHCP address 20+ times per minute. Restarting the router did not solve the issue as it was comcast broadcasting release/renew over and over again and my router not being able to handle it.

I've actually been having the same problem. It got a lot better when i updated the firmware on my router. Now it only happens once a week or so, rather then every few minutes.

It's been happening occasionally here at work too, and to my brother over the hill on a totally different provider. (comcast for him, seldomlink for me)

problem solved.. sorta.. got some checking to do, but either modem is dead (cable plug) or the line itself going to the modem is dead.. either way.. had 2nd modem from comcast running for the phone as is.. just using theirs now..thanks all!
