Does anybody know if it is necessary to lap the base of the crystal orb? Would I get better temperatures by doing it?

no, its smooth enough.. so lapping it wouldnt get you any better temps..

It may have a smooth surface, but it may not be a level surface. I don't want to second geuss you on this, Dissolved, but he may want to check to see if the base is level. For the most part having a level base, is a little more important than having a smooth surface.

Crystal, I agree with you as you should check to be sure.

yea, but it could be aight if you got some 2k grit sandpaper and did a final shine :)
Like they said it is a real nickel base smooth finish!
If you have nothing better to do it then go for it :D

Alright, thanks for the advice guys, I don't think i'll go for it.
The only problem with my cORb is that it has a few scatches on the base, would this affect the temps?
Depends how deep the scratches are. No matter what there will be minor sanding marks made from the manufacture.
