Here's what I've got to deal with. 98fe, I didn't make one of those emergency disk (who needs them right) and now I've got problems. I wanted to switch network cards. I de-installed the one that was in the machine, rebooted, shut down, put in the new one, powered up, installed the software for it, rebooted then...

"windows found an error in your system files and restored a recent backup of the files to fix the problem. Press enter to restart your computer"

That's all I get. It's a continual loop. After every reboot it goes through the checklist and gives me the same thing. I even put the other network card in and still no relief. So. Am I boned or is there something I can do about this?

(note: reinstalling everything = boned)

Try doing a registry restore?

I can't get to the os, not even in "safe" mode. It just keeps looping through the error message and then the rebooting sequence.

You MIGHT be able to restore using another computers repair disk, or you can try re-installing over the corrupted install- it will sometimes just restore the os and drivers to original condition, leaving the installed software alone.

One last-ditch effort I have with 98 is fdisk/mbr.
It doesn't sound like it would do any good in your case but..I have done it a few times when I didn't think it would work yet it did.

Just make a bootdisk on a buddies computer. Put it in at startup and it should copy the files that are misisng now and take care of the problem. If not do like the other guy before me said and reinstall windows, but dont do a complete reformat. That will just reinstall the files that you lost and you will have to set it up again with the personal settings that you like.

Wouldn't I need an emergency repair disk from the same kind of processor (K6-2)?

Also, how would fdisking the master boot record fix it?

Just make a boot disk on any other 98SE computer. That'll let you boot up, and get to everything you need. They're all the same. I have one boot disk i've used on many computers.

I've never seen the fdisk/mbr command do anything at all. last I checked, it wasn't even an available option. And fdisking the mbr would = boned. It's an OS problem, not a hard drive problem. One thing you may want to do is create a boot floopy on any 98SE machine, then copy the deltree.exe command from \windows\command to the floopy. Reboot with the disk, deltree windows, then reinstall windows.

As to the fdisk/mbr bit: like I said, I don't think it would do any good- but I have had it do something a few times. I'm not sure if it was a file system pointer that got messed up in fat or what, but....
I have a couple of floppies I used to use for 9x installs: batch files for fdisk/cdrom driver installs; everything you need to install 9x except the cd.

Last ditch, when I'm ready to reinstall the os I give it a shot. Worked a couple times and I don't know why!

Try just booting into dos from any old bootdisk and in the <C:\Windows> directory type <scanreg /restore> and select a backup that says not started.

I used an emergency boot disk from one of my other systems and then tried "scanreg /restore", I got a bad command or file name response. I'm gonna copy the scanreg file from my Duron machine and see if it'll work then. Any other suggestions if it doesn't?

***edit: I just looked on my Duron and "scanreg" wasn't there. "Scanregw" was and so I tried that on my K6-2 and got a "cannot be ran in DOS mode" response.

For clarification, I'm running 98fe, not 98se.

I used a Win98 bootdisc from my compaq 5716 presario PIII 450mhz, to get my current system up and running. Total newbie and offline it worked, I'm bad. or lucky;)

From past experience, I've been able to boot 95's, 98se's, and ME's from any one of their bootdisks. Last time needed, I booted my 98 upgrade w/ my ME bootdisk, formatted the hdd, and started back up w/ 95. U should be able to fire that thing back up w/ any one of those.
