View Full Version : What's your #2 store (heck, maybe even #1)?

We all know that Newegg rules the roost around here. In the General forum people create builds and link everything to Newegg. After reading a related article on how Newegg could potentially be feeling a bit too big for their britches I'm curious what other sites people use to order. More specifically maybe a site to become, dare I say, my #1 site to order from? I'm not trying to trash Newegg, I'm just looking for an alternative - maybe somewhere that doesn't have a restocking fee when they send you a dead card, or maybe a place that has more competitive pricing. What do you have?

I used to use www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com/), and ordered stuff from multiple places...

I bought some power supplies and cases from buy.com before. They carry Antec and Corsair (all of Corsair's stuff too).

People link to Newegg because they've got the best website deisgn by FAR for finding things. They don't carry everything, especially more niche stuff, and aren't always the best price. I guess people could see the Newegg links as an endorsement to buy there, certainly service-wise there's no reason not to, but people should understand that shopping around is usually best.

ZipZoomFly is most like NewEgg IMO and thus #2
No one has mentioned eBay (you have to be careful here though)
Radioshack & Homedepot have been great for custom mods
Xoxide.com
Frozencpu.com (Everything tends to be a bit overpriced)
Tigerdirect.com --> Compusa (only thing thats local)
crazypc.com
jab-tech.com

eBay is my first choice. I haven't had many issues with sellers so I guess I'm kinda lucky.
For real sellers Amazon is always the next choice since they give free shipping on $25+ orders and no tax.

For me
Frys #1
Newegg #2

If you are lucky enough to have a Fry's nearby, that place is unbeatable.

Seems I get most from Newegg and Tigerdirect but for cooling stuff and odd stuff, it is either sidewinder, frozencpu, or jab-tech.

Newegg does take my #1, but only just barely. I was posting about this too. My #2 is eWiz.
Wish I had a Fry's around here. Don't have them or Microcenters around here. :(

Newegg mainly, frozencpu and siderwindercomputers for some of the harder to find stuff. I'll order from logicsupply every now and then, but since I think they do more commercial orders ordering only one or two things gets kind of pricey. Don't have a Frys or Microcenter anywhere near me so no B&M love for me.

I use this store because they are right across the street from my work, and if i can pick it up or just get it shipped, But they always have good prices.
Directron.com
Microcenter fpr a physical store, and anytime I need an absurdly low priced I7.:)
That pretty much it Newegg and MCenter.

Newegg and Tiger Direct are my top two picks, ewiz might join them while hunting for deals on my new server build.
Best Buy sadly because it's the only thing around me if I need it like instantly or if there's something good that I see...
New Egg & Microcenter.
My Microcenter is five hours away, but I'd be lying if I didn't come up with excuses just to get into the city and go there. It's really nice to be able to physically inspect something before purchase.

NewEgg or Tankguys for motherboards and CPUs.
Jab-Tech, SVC, FrozenCPU, and Petra's (in order of preference) for fans, heatsinks, fan controllers, etc. I've made a very few orders from Sidewinder, also (most recently for an AM3 Megahalem bracket).
Amazon for networking stuff.
NewEgg or Fry's for RAM.
NewEgg, Fry's, Dell, Amazon for HDD.

I would like to go into one of these "Micro Centers." IIRC, they aren't in IL. I do love the egg though. No tax is always nice (downside of Compusa/Tigerdirect, IL, based so I have to pay tax).
Ebay is always the second place I look.
I'm global.

You won't find AquaThieves or Performance-POS in any list of mine.

Imagine a gymnasium just filled with motherboards, ram, cases, video cards, coolers...etc. It's nerd utopia...at least the one in Kansas City is, lol. Parking sucks though...fyi

Microcenter, and they are working their way up to #1 for me.
I used to hate the place (several years ago), but apparently they turned things around at some point.
The local store near me beats NewEgg prices on a regular basis and has a pretty sizeable inventory. I can't think of anything off hand they didn't have that I was looking for. I'm a huge fan of instant gratification, so MC saves me quite a bit in shipping charges as well ;)
Fry's would be next, but our stores seem to be going down hill lately. Getting more pricey while selection diminishing. Particularly when it comes to motherboards, ram, etc...

#1/#2 store? I prefer a local plumbing store called "Handyman". They carry everything I need.

Buy.com and B&H Photo & Video. Those two places generally beat other places on price, a lot of the time there is no shipping charge and no tax charged. Amazon charges me tax so that pretty much rules them out, particularly since I can usually get the same thing for the same or better price from Buy.com. I've never had an issue ordering from either place. B&H takes a lot of time off for religious holidays so you gotta be careful with that (they always post upcoming closures prominently on their website), and they are on the east coast so shipping usually takes a couple of days longer to get to me then from other places. I've never been dissatisfied with theirs or Buy.com's service.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
New Microcenter in Yonkers (New York City) has my business anytime I'm near there. It's a 2-2.5 hour drive for me, plus some tolls. I made the most out of yesterday's trip and dropped $580 on core components for a new build. The closest one prior to that was in Boston, a 3.5 hour drive. I don't go out that way anymore and that was the closest decent store from Albany. There's just not enough demand in Upstate NY for decent computer shops. Even the smaller ones have all folded up.
Newegg just about the rest of the time.

For me my number one is newegg because it is the greatest place to shop. My second is tigerdirect because i get next day shipping because i live so close.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread because I never realized I have a microcenter within 45 mins of me. There prices seem pretty kickass so far. Don't have the case I want for my new build or I'd be down there now buying a new rig :<
yeah micro center is about an hour from me in bostpn and i havent gotten a chance to go there yet but im thinking of overhauling my rig with a new cpu/mobo/ram and ill prolly go there for that.
But i think(maybe) we can all agree as great as new egg is, it's no where near as awesome as it used to be a few years ago. I think 2-3 years in a row theyve had nothing for deals or even black friday thats just been too good to pass up. Anyone agree?
Newegg refuses to acknowledge the existence of islands in the Pacific, so they are out of the running.
#1 = MWAVE (http://www.mwave.com/)
#2 = Provantage (http://www.provantage.com/)
We average US$30,000.00 per year with MWAVE; small potatoes to a behemoth like Newegg, but still, their loss. FWIW, MWAVE has been excellent in our experience. Given the volume, we have our share of RMAs, but there has never been a restocking fee or any kind of hassle whatsoever.

Never had a problem with them, prices are the best, always changed items before they shipped if i made mistakes, customer support is almost instant and shipping is just great!, i don't know theres nothing i can find wrong about them.............

Also, i don't know if i should say this but they RMA'd items that were already here to change them for something else i liked more, but they told me "we'll do this for you just this once" so i repacked, reshipped and got the new stuff back!
Now thats great customer service ^^
