The XP 1800 is $145 and the 1.4 T-Bird is $100. I have a PIII 700 right now, not overclocked or anything... but need a new computer... this one sucks :P
But, is a 1.533 Ghz and 1.4 Ghz cpu really all that different? I'm gonna use an Abit KR7A-133R Mobo with PC2700 Kingmax 5ns DDR RAM.
Now, I know that the 1.4 tbirds are nice for overclocking. I'll set up a great air conditioning unit for my computer, so heat isnt a problem.
Which one should I go with, and why?
Thanks guys.
instead of the 1.4 thunderbird I would get an XP 1600+ it is a 1.4 chip and has sse instruction support and will run cooler. the only drawback is that it comes multiplier locked. It does not cost that much more.

I can't give you all the facts and statistics, but for the money, I'd get the XP, and here is my little example:
I'm on the OC.Com Seti Team and have an XP1800(1533@1670) and a TBird 1000@1400, both crunch full time.
The TBird does a work unit in about 6 hours or a bit more.
The XP1800 does one in about 3 1/2 hours.
Admittedly, my TBird starts off with more of a disadvantage than a 1.4 Bird, but the architecture of the XP chips is different, and faster.
Take a look at the cpu database and do some reading- it seems to me that most people who are air-cooling XPs between the 1600 and 1800 are getting just about the same top end. You might be able to save a few bucks and get a 1600 for about the same price as a 1.4 Tbird and get up around 1.7ghz with it.
I have an xp1600 and a 1.4 t-bird (using the t-bird now). If it were me and I was buying a new chip I would buy the xp1600 as long as the price is about the same. As of this moment the price of the xp is $10 more than the t-bird. The future as of now belongs to the xp and future revisions. It has some software enhancements that windows can use. A properly setup t-bird can pretty much crunch with it but in real world desktop applications the xp will feel faster due to these enhancements. If price is a major concern then the t-bird will run roughly the same.
Some of the new xps oc very nicely and the t-bird just will not run this high under "normal" cooling solutions. Love my t-bird but it is getting a little long in the tooth for an OCer.
If you can swing it you might want to look at the xp1800 (cheapest on pricewatch $133). A descent oc and it will be telling the t-bird "can't touch this".
Listen to the other guys here get the XP is faster per clock cycle, cooler, overclocks higher, and the price isn't that much different.
XP XP XP, If he cant do it no one CAN!
I was just bored...anyway..The XP has a greater advantage of teh tbirds right now because os their added enchancements....wait a second..this has been mentioned before....Just get the XP, you will be much more happy.will make your intel look like a 486....:D
