I'm checking a co-worker's Vista/sp1 laptop for possible malware, I figured that hijackthis would be a good start. Here's the report:

I'm not familiar with Vista, and it's been a long while since I've dealt with Windows malware problems, if anything looks suspect here please post a reply.

you'd be better off ditching AVG and using either MS security essentials, Avira antivir or avast antivirus as from experience avg is one of the worst programs for letting infections through.

Also, run a fully updated copy of malwarebytes antimalware (on a full scan) which should pick up any malware on the system

ihrsetrdr
05-20-10, 02:09 PM
Malwarebytes finds several infections, but the whole system just freezes; I've been trying to save the log, or at least get a screenshot but end up having to just shutdown with the power button. I did delete R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555 and will reboot to retry a Malwarebytes scan.

Edit: I couldn't find the O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Launcher] %WINDIR%\SMINST\launcher.exe in the registry...

2nd edit: Windows malicious software removal tool successfully ran, but did not find anything at all.

Have you tried running malwarebytes in safe mode?

When it successfully completes the scan, remove anything it finds.

Use CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download) to clear the temporary internet files and temp files as the malware seems to be hiding there.

This (http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=49527) may help with completing the malwarebytes scan

Sometimes I can get into safe mode, but the last time I tried the system just hung, then had a BSOD. After doing the 'self healing' thing that Vista has, it booted to the desktop O.K. The owner of this laptop does not have any kind of disc(system restore, recovery etc) so I'm being real careful not to bork it. She said she ordered a disc from the manufacturer, we'll see what she ends up getting.

you might want to put something better than AVG on it. There are some recommendations for decent a/v software in post #5.

to uninstall AVG, use the 64bit removal tool from here (http://www.avg.com/gb-en/download-tools)

edit - also remove the following (in hijackthis)

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)

the machine should be fine as i can't see anything else in the logs

I was about to say this. AVG is a huge memory/resource hog, and version 8 is not the most recent one. I use Avira (after disabling avnotify.exe) and it's a champ.

Also the more toolbars and BHO's you have in IE, the longer it takes to load.

Why does your friend still have some symantec stuff in there? http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=139459 to remove it

Finally go ahead and remove all those "file missing" entries, and the RunOnce item.

I'd personally recommend you remove Spyware Doctor also, but that's for you to decide.

Thanks for the link, I didn't know that Symantec made it difficult to remove. I talked to the owner today, I'm going to "decrapify" the system for her. She's heard me talk about Linux and was curious, but as much as I'd like to 'convert' another soul to the Penguin side, I didn't think that it would be in her best interests, as she uses the laptop with her ipod and Zune.

you could always set up a dual boot between windows/linux then you have the best of both worlds. there is also the option of virtual machines for trying out linux as well

Being a strictly Linux guy, I thought of suggesting a dual boot option to the laptop owner, but I think it might be a little confusing...she had no concept of the difference between XP and Vista, no real idea of what an OS is, what a browser is, etc.

Nah dual-boot will only waste her hard drive space as she'll probably never spend the time to learn Linux. Go safe, go with XP.

Well, the owner of this laptop found the original Restore disc, so I went ahead and did a clean install. Had she been able to get me the disc in the beginning, I'd have not spent the time picking the crap out of her system, but oh well.
SP2 will be installed shortly, am transferring her files from my main rig over the LAN right now. I shall collect a bottle of good Scotch for this job. ;)
