View Full Version : Graphics card and Sound card too close together?

Hi...I have a question that doesn't seem to fit anywhere else.
I have the EVGA x58 3x Sli mobo with an nvidia geforce 8800 gt gpu. As some of you may know, this gpu is a single slot graphics card with the fan on the bottom, which is a typical design.
Today I bought the Creative Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Soundcard. It takes a PCIe slot, which is directly below the primary PCIe 2.0 slot for the GPU. As a result, the soundcard effectively stacks right below the gpu with no space in between for air flow. Should I be worried that this might ruin my soundcard or my gpu? I've read somewhere that anything that plugs into a PCIe slot can be plugged into a PCIe 2.0 slot. Is this true? If it is, should I move the soundcard to the second PCIe 2.0 slot?
Thanks for your help in advance

You can put the sound card below the GPU there still enough space for air, all it needs is the crack that will be there, you can also use any PCI-E slot if you wan't.:)

Wow you learn something new everyday...lol I wasn't aware you could use any PCIE slot for a PCIE 1x device... that is awesome news... :)

Yes, look at this motherboard.

Just out of interest what temp does your GPU get upto? I guess you only have the one 8800GT?
I had two in sli that would reach over 90c on a warm day! Thats with a PCI slot between them too.

90c That is normal temp.

Why does my EVGA graphics card run hot?
QUOTE:Video card temperatures typically range from 40C to 80C. Most high end video cards such as the 7, 8, and 9 series typically display temperatures 50-70C idle and up to 80C-90C at load. The latest 4xx series cards run hotter than most and can reach a maximum of 105C.

I think that nVidia was pushing it using a single slot cooler for the 8800GT (at the time)
I would love to see a 480GTX during furmark :) Man those run hot

The Quote from above is. The latest 4xx series cards run hotter than most and can reach a maximum of 105 C. That is a safe temperature from nvidia engineers.

thats awesome, I never realized that or even thought about it... b/c usually things of 1 slot type don't fit in another...lol I'm a happy panda now...
Now something I read somewhere else was that running in a PCIE 1x slot, vs PCIE 8x, vs PCIE 16x that a PCIE 1x device will run faster/better in a 16x slot.
Is this true? I mean sure therotically I guess it could as the slot is faster & such but on the other hand the device is a 1x so it shouldnt matter??
