Hello all,

I'm considering moving to New York next summer and I'd like to know what ISPs are considered to be the best around Brooklyn and Manhattan. I can't just go to, say, Comcast's site and check because they require the exact address and I have no idea where I'd be.

I download a ton and game a ton, so I'm looking somewhere in the range of 15mpbs+ down. With the advent of wonderful things like Hulu, I'm forgoing the useless and expensive Cable TV packages and pouring the money into my bandwidth.

Also, I've never lived in an apartment before, and I probably will in this case. Do tenants get to choose which ISP they go for or does the entire building get wired for one ISP and you have the option to pay the building owner or landlord to have access?

Thanks for the info!

I can tell you that being just outside the City, I have Optimum Online (Cablevision) and it's not that great. I do the triple play and my bill is sorta high, but that's because I already passed the promotional 12-month period. I live in White Plains, in Westchester... not far AT ALL from Manhattan, maybe 30 min, and about 10 min from the Bronx.

I live in a co-op and coordinating a FIOS option with Verizon right now... next week they're going to do the PATH CREATION to run all the lines to each of our 14 units. The main line already goes to our basement.

Anyway, FIOS kicks major butt. My parents have FIOS and I set it up for them a couple yrs back. They live in Rockland county, which is also about 30 min from Manhattan, but on the other side of the Hudson River.

I was just @ my parents' place today for the holiday, and did a bandwidth test during the day... I saved the link on my PC that I use there, but I remember it was something like 25.XX mbps downstream, and like 23.XX upstream... I could swear their upload was about 5-10mbit a few months ago... either way, I can download at 3.1megabytes/s with their connection, and the lowest I ever saw was like 2.6-2.7, even during peak hours... but usually it's 3.1 and at worst ~2.9. That's SICK bandwidth.

With Optimum, I can't stand them... I dip as low as 1.0mbps during peak hours in the evening, and I've been complaining for about 3 months - they've sent a tech at LEAST 4 times in the past 6 or so weeks, and I'm still complaining...

Optimum has awesome customer services though... they do really try hard.

It all depends on where exactly you'll live, and what type of development you're in. If I lived in a house where I am, I'd already have FIOS, but b/c I'm in a co-op, it's a very slow procedure to get the contracts and path creations in place... I've been trying to get FIOS since the very beginning of 2009. I'm anticipating completion by mid-summer, and hope so too. :) FIOS ROCKS

FIOS with Verizon ++++. My friend lives in Manhattan and has been getting like 60down 20up for like $60/m. Makes me so jealous.

FIOS all the way, the price point will be relatively the same for Cable company triple play.

Are you serious? that is really strange for optimum, CALL them up ASAP you must be having problems on your line. i love optimum, i have boost package and i get advertised speeds. and not just burst speeds. ... with speed tests i get 50/5. instead of 30/5

they are the best company in the city. very few places have fios. its much much better than time warner.

optimum online has 3 packages 15/2 connection 30/5 connection and 101/15 connection. pricing is very reasonable. Also the latancy is very low compared to DSL.
