GTA4 Error - Help!

Hey guys, I have the same problem as this guy http://www.overclock.net/pc-games/640767-gta-iv-rmn20-error.html . I am assuming he found a solution. Anyone know what he did with his GTA 4 files to fix it? I bought it from Steam as well.

Good news: I found a fix to launch the game.
Bad news: The shadow/ light flickers in the game. Fix?

It's probably the newest version since Steam automatically download and install new patches.

Fix? Downgrade to 1.0.4
Only problem is if you're using the steam version you won't be able to do that. I found this out the hard way after buying myself my own version of the game. Had a mates version installed for about 4 months then I buy my own version and I find out that I have to use the latest version.

Real disappointment. So yeah, there's no fix if your'e using the steam version.

Not sure if this is a real fix but I changed the compatibility mode to "Windows Vista Service Pack 2" and its been working pretty nice and smooth. Awesome game!!

I'll have to try more thoroughly, I have the same problem. It started months ago before this recent update.

All I did was change the compatibility mode
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\GTAIV\ then right click LaunchGTAIV>properties>compatibility>choose Windows Vista (service pack 2)

Fixes the launch error and flickers in the game for me.

Running in Vista SP2 compat mode worked for me.
