My mom and I tried to get SLi working earlier tonight, and the card that I received -might- be DOA, we are not sure.

Basically, we installed the PNY 9800GTX+ into the top pci-e slot, and installed the EVGA 9800GTX into the bottom slot, and connected the display via the first dvi port on the gtx+. Upon power up, the gpu fan would not spin down from 100%, like my evga card does.

We tried a few different things to troubleshot, but the third pci-e slot is not being detected by windows, regardless if the sli bridge is connected on both cards.

If anyone could please explain the steps to enabling SLi on the 9800GTX and 9800GTX+, that would be great.

Did you go into the Nvidia control panel and enable SLI?

I forgot to mention, whatever was installed into the bottom blue pci-e slot was not detected by windows 7, so the option for SLi was not there.

We tried the PNY 9800GTX+ in the bottom slot, and my older EVGA 9800GTX.

Do I need to un-install my drivers first, do the hardware upgrade, and then re-install a fresh driver onto the machine?

Are you certain you can SLI those two cards. Spec-wise, they must be a little different.

I would try a complete remove and re-install if you're sure they will SLI without any issue.

Evga's FAQ says that the 9800GTX and 9800GTX+ will work in SLi: http://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=58112

Since both cards are essentially the same other than the GTX+ die shrink (65nm to 55nm), SLi -should- work.

I will keep you posted later this evening if this works.

Okay, cool. At least you know you either have a bad driver setup, or one of the cards is bad. Next step would be to try each individually.

The PNY card was ultimately the culprit. It was indeed DOA.
